Dynamic range switching. It's fast. Like crazy fast. I've been using an appletv 4k pretty much since release, and it's widely considered one of the best streaming devices on the market. And yet ... when your source media switches dynamic range between sdr, hdr 10, and DV the screen goes blank for 10 seconds or more. This is common on other devices as well (I've observed it on roku and firetv). On the new google tv however dynamic range switching is nearly instantaneous meaning less time spent waiting for content to display and more time spent watching. It's a little thing, but it's imminently noticeable. It's the kind of difference that's so glaring it makes you wonder how other manufacturers have failed so thoroughly in this regard.
What do you guys think? Any features or performance quirks that you've noticed/love?
Are you sure the Apple TV 4K, Roku, FireTV’s are not also doing auto Frame Rate Matching / TV Refresh Switching as well ?
That is what takes a fairly long time on older TV’s and AVR’s.
The Chromecast dongle cannot auto change a TV‘s refresh Rate. It is only changing between SDR and HDR picture modes and that is why it’s faster.
There is nothing wrong with the Apple TV, Roku or FireTV, they have not “failed“ at anything. It’s just your personal TV is very slow switching Refresh Rates.
Disable Refresh Switching on those devices and they will be as fast as the Chromecast Dongle.
