Google Duo - Shield TV vs Google TV

by suresh31

I have been using Duo on my Shield TV for couple of years already and over the period the quality of the stream has gotten much much better to the point I really liked it on my 65inch TV. I got Google TV last week and was all excited to try Duo on Google's own device. To my surprise, the quality of stream is really bad and it is day night compared to Shield.

Both apps are of same version and have same permission settings. Shield is producing much sharper image and GoogleTV's image is blurry as hell.

The only difference between the two is that the camera is connecting to Shield directly and connected to GoogleTV using usb-c hub.

My camera is Logitech C920, same camera I have been using for couple of years.

One would think Google will have better support for webcams now that they are officially supporting Duo but guess not. I will be using Shield until GoogleTV gets better at this.

anyone else notice similar issue?

Is it the camera stream going out of the video feed coming in?

Is the Shield Wired/Wireless? Is the Chromecast with Google TV wired through adapter or wireless?

I haven't tried it yet, but a hub should still be fast enough. Could it be that the SoC on the CCGTV isn't fast enough to encode the video and also decode the incoming video?

The Shhield TV does destroy the CCGTV in CPU and GPU (and hence being 3x-4x the cost).

Google Duo is still a beta app on Android TV in general, I'm going to assume the Shield received some improvements in that regard, since the Chromecast is just a recent device maybe Google hasn't give the same treatment. Time will tell.

Google TV is not even in the same league as a shield
