Watch DVDs from external DVD drive with Nvidia Shield TV (AV Mode buggy?)

by grossmaul

Hi there,

I have a Nvidia Shield TV with Kodi installed on it and I have a Samsung SE-208DB which supports the AV Connectivity.
I've read many threads about that topic and the only way to legaly watch real DVDs with an external drive requires the drive to have the AV mode. So I have one here.

Now my problem is, that if I activate the AV mode and insert a DVD disk, then the Shield tells me that there is a device detected and it even recognizes the name of the disk. But no more. If you go into the storage settings, you find the drive as removable device and it tells you (after initializing the disk) that the disk was ejected successfully. I'm not able to access the content because of that. Everytime it tells me that it was ejected despite the drive is still closed with the disk in it

Here is a photo with the disk of \"Matrix\":

My Shield TV has the latest Android TV Version and is up to date.
And no, ripping the DVD is not an option because of legal issues.

Does anyone know how to fix this? I really want to make my Shield TV capable to play physical DVD disks without having a big ass DVD Player next to my TV...

Probably a driver issue. When googling nvidia shield external DVD player the very first link says to try MLUSB mounter and that can launch kodi and has been working with blu ray and other external devices. Talks about av mode etc.

You know you can legally make copies of stuff you own? There is literally no legal issues lol.

You have to rip your dvds into mp4, hevc, h.264 or any other digital file and then stream and play them on shield tv.

I used Handbrake for a long time, but it can only deal with some certain DVDs to mp4 or mkv and most of my dvds cannot be ripped.

What I'm using now is a software tool entitled Easefab DVD ripper. It does exactly what I want: ripping DVDs and ISO image files without any problems. Easy to use, it works for me and I detected no errors up to now. The output quality is excellent. I've ripped about 100 discs and 30 iso image files since then, and it works! It's worth a try.

Below is an useful tutorial for you:
