Hi there, I'm currently looking for any suggestions on an Android TV Box that can play 4k remuxes off an external USB hard drive. I've been looking at the Mi Box S but don't know if there are any cheaper alternatives.
I don't really care if it supports Netflix or anything else in 4K, I just want a box that can play high bitrate 4k off a USB.
The firestick 4k is a good choice if you are looking for cheap, paired with an otg cable you get usb 2.0 support. Its on sale for 29.99 right now.

if you don't care about streaming you should instead look at pure kodi box.

Pick a box from here and use his modded ATV ROM. It passes through all the HD audio codecs, plus has an app that automatically changes the frame rate to match the media being played.
These boxes can also dual boot into CoreELEC for perfect play back of your media.

If you're indifferent about about streaming or even Android TV, you're better off getting an SBC like the Odroid N2 for instance with CoreELEC (Kodi) on it. Much faster and smoother than any Android TV box I know of, and plays back anything you throw at it on pretty much any bitrate below 400 Mbps (haven't tested any higher since it would be pointless)
