Usb dvb-t2 tuner

by doctorhalo

Hi all. Does anyone know if there is a usb tv tuner that is recognised by Android TV? My plan is to upgrade a single hdmi old tv to a modern tv with a mi box or Google chromecast and connect a tuner to see antenna tv in Italy (dvb-t2 hevc main 10 compatible). Thank you in advance

There are four USB tuners:

MyGica T230

MyGica T230C

MyGica T232 (dual tuner)

TVButtler 100TC

The MyGica ones only work with the FTA Tuner Loader app.

The TVButtler only works with the TVMosaic Live! app.

You can also use a Windows or Linux computer with a server application like Plex, Emby, NextPVR, TVheadend, among others with any kind of USB tuner.

You can also use a network tuner like the HDHomerun HDHR5-2DT, connected directly to the router without the need for a computer.

I personally would not be even trying to do what you want “all in the one” Android box.

Firstly Firmware support, which is extremely important for DVB USB tuners is generally very poor unless you strike it lucky or do lots of detailed pre purchase device research.

These two lists might have something for an all in one box solution:

EDIT: there is this (with no Netflix App or approval), running old v7.0 Android TV Firmware:

BEWARE: Firmware support is a mindfield on such DVB devices.

Secondly in Europe, you have to deal with 25i/50 Frame Per Second Broadcast TV, and that means you need a device that does auto Frame Rate Matching to sync 50fps Broadcast TV with 50Hz video output on the TV.

Otherwise expect some 'loverly' TV viewing playback judder and stutter.

The only Android TV devices that do Frame Rate Matching are the Nvidia Shield and the Mi Boxes. Plus the recent Amazon Fire TV devices.

As already mentioned for simplicity, support and reliability you really have to buy a network Tuner, like a HdHomerun, then you can use the HDHR Kodi PVR Addon to watch TV. That also gives you a nice grid EPG.

With a HDHR, you can then also use Android TV's inbuilt "Live Channels" App.

That is the Plug n Play solution that "just works" with virtually all 2018 - 2020 Android TV devices.

I've seen that HDHR costs too much (about 140€)! With that price I can buy a new tv 😁 Buuuut I've a Raspberry Pi 3 and with pi tv hat and tvheadend I can do the same I need. I don't know if the speed is similar but it will do the job at a significant lower price (about 20€). Do you know pros and cons?
