CCWGTV 2.4 vs 5

by FeelingGate8

Hi folks,

I have a Chromecast w Google TV. Yesterday a technician from my ISP was here to set me up with an updated modem/router. He said this type of router does not display 2 different SSID's for 2.4 vs 5 but it somehow magically matches the device that connects to it to the 'best' frequency/channel. I was like 'Sure'. I connected my CCGWTV to my new router and it works fine but is there any way to tell if it's using 2.4 or 5 on the Chromecast? Thanks.

Yes under WiFi -> WIFI bands -> 5hhz only

you can select 5ghz only to get the faster speed channel on your GTVCC

There is a way if you enable the Android developer options and then activate the option of displaying detailed WiFi data, it will show the frequency and other technical data like signal strength.

Edit: Oh, also, you can download WiFi Analyzer app, don't really know if it works in Android TV, if not there should be another similar one

Probably by logging in to your router

If you log on to your router's web GUI using a web browser there might be a setting that lets you disable the feature that automatically chooses which band each device on your network is connected to. On my Netgear Nighthawk that feature is called "smart connect" but on your router it might be called something else but the principle will be the same. Once it's disabled you should see two or three separate SSID's. Some routers have two 5 Ghz bands and some have just one plus the 2.4 Ghz band. Then you can manually choose which band each device on your network in on. I have mine set up that way. I would rather choose myself which band my device is on rather than letting the router decide. (With some routers you might need to use a smart phone app to set it up rather than a web browser.)

This sounds exactly like my xfi router which xfinity made me use. You should be able to view the connections in the web interface, where you should also be able to enable unique SSID's.
