Frustrated with the current state of cloud gaming...

by blusky75

It's just absysmal right now.

GeForce Now - great for shield TV but the big publishers are unwilling to commit to it

XBOX GamePass Ultimate - unsupported on android TV but your YMMV with sideloading and even if you get it to work, 720P only

Stadia - again, unsupported on android TV + general consumer distrust that google won't commit to it.

PsNow - need a PC to stream it to androidTV. The PC interface is rage inducing and there's a ton of shovelware to sift through

...

That leaves local streaming as the local options:

Xbox Series S/X. No streaming to other devices

PS4/5 remoteplay: sideloading needed YMMV

GeForce experience: it works but not everything works smoothly from the couch (computer could be locked, games that lack controller support, etc). I ended going with this option with reluctance.

I think it's safe to say that cloud gaming won't be taken seriously this generation by the big players

I have two shields that are perfectly capable of streaming games. Just offer something and take my money dammit :)

EDIT 1 - seems I should give stadia a shot (I still don’t trust googles commitment level given their track record)

EDIT 2 - PC streaming clearly is the winner (I would agree, as I use GFE local streaming)

EDIT 3 - when is Sony and Microsoft going to get their act together and take TV-based cloud gaming seriously?

Stadia has been awesome for me so far.

Vanterax

Sideloaded the Stadia app on my Shield. Works just fine.

I recently jumped into Stadia. Enjoying the free trials obviously but the cost isn't awful. Issue I have is the connectivity issues with controllers. New robot white xbox controller won't connect to my chromebook or Android phone, and my switch pro controller needs to stay on usb to cut latency.

Stadia is an awesome service, I believe next year Google will bring a lot of new features, including Android TV, and great games. I am playing Stadia on shield TV. You have to sideload the apk and it works.

Stadia is great and Google is pumping money into it at least for the next year.

I don't get the PSNow bit... you can't just do it with the mobile app sideloaded?

Stadia sideloaded is rough but works once you are in a game perfectly. (just no multi controller support)

Ripcord

On controller support with geforce experience: Use Geforce with Steam (Big Picture). Controller problem largely solved, Steam's support for customization and special cases here is outstanding. Even with non-steam games. Or use Steam Link.

This is a bit pricy. But basically allows you to play any games on pc that you own. https://shadow.tech/en-gb/

I use Stadia almost exclusively now, runs perfect for me.

If you're in the market for Cyberpunk 2077 there's a deal for a free Stadia Premier package (Stadia controller, chromecast ultra) when you pre-order.

Also there's something like 35 games you get with a Pro membership which you'll get with your free first month.

I don't either. The only reason people here are saying "stadia is great" is because they're scared shitless that google is going to cancel it like it has so many others, with the hope that if it gets users then they won't kill it.

Shadow pc has been a pretty good experience for me

Parsec gaming has been solid for streaming a game from one PC to another on the local network, as well as general computer remote control. It can stream to remote users on the internet too (with some ping time added)

If the big publishers would commit to GeForce now it would be ideal. It works so well especially compared to other competitors, like there’s hardly a noticeable difference. Unfortunately I think big publishers are trying to develop their own could gaming platforms or don’t know/care/see cloud gaming as a viable option.
