Apple fan using Google TV now. Anyone else?

by Livewirecms

As a diehard Apple fan (IMac, IPhone, IPad etc..) My house is has 3 TV’s all with an AppleTV box on them. I kept hearing about Google TV. I bought one and thought I’d try it. I have had it for about 2 weeks now and I haven’t used my Apple TV once!!

The interface as a YoutubeTV user and having it integrated is awesome. Also the watchlist and “Thumbs up/down” features are almost TiVo like which I really missed until now. It has been suggesting so many movies and shows across my apps that I constantly have something to watch. Plus sideloading apps and adding storage has made this a dream stream for me.

I almost feel guilty because I have convinced my relatives to all invest in Apple TV boxes when really all they need is this. Have any other Apple users found limitations “other than lack of Apple+” that have made them not like the Google TV or am I missing something?

Same here, been using Shields since the 2015 came out.

Same. I miss airplay, but not enough to go back to Apple TV.

I have a Nvidia Shield, and my LG TV just got the ability to stream Apple TV+. If you have a newer TV, you should look into it.

I like some apple products but the tv is just expensive as shit. I can do the same visiting every station and subscribing. It’s horrible.

Get a nvidia shield.

the apple tv just feels like a device from the past with just apps when you could open netflix and hulu and fine everything now everything is spread everywhere and apple is trying to push the apple tv app to for all your content in one place but its just not that good of an app

Yep; Apple TV is way over priced and honestly not as good as Google (or Android) TV.

You can install smart youtube tv and watch ad-free also

I stopped using the ATV because of the remote. Been using a ShieldTV and haven't thought twice about it. Well, except when I can't find the remote. For whatever reason its hard to see.

I was an Apple exclusive user from 1997 to 2016. Power Macs, Mac Pros, iPhone 1, iPad 1 etc.

The Apple ecosystem is a jail with countless limitations. The Apple fanboy sites contribute to reality distortion field of uniqueness, unparallel design and magical tech exclusive to Apple's superior kingdom.

They just copy Germans and Japanese on hardware design and on software Xerox, Palm, Microsoft, Google and the jailbreak iOS community.

Google tends to make all of their services accessible to iOS

I’ve just purchased the chromecast with google TV for my bedroom. Picking it up this morning. I’m also heavily integrated into the Apple ecosystem, iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV’s, homepods. However I have had a chromecast since the first gen came out. I even imported one from the US before it was available in the U.K. I also have a few google home speakers and a pixel 2Xl.

I’ve been using my chromecast in the bed room but decided I wanted to try google TV.

Also love that you can side load apps. I was given a fire TV stick a few years ago as a gift but I’ve never liked it. Always liked the chromecast though. I toyed with the idea of getting the nexus player back in the day but never did. This seems more fully fledged.

I’m looking forward to the suggestions part as I don’t get that on my Apple TV’s. it’s just a queue of shows I’ve already watched.

I tried. I got the Nvidia Shield Pro and loved Android TV. But the Bluetooth radio of the NSP is trash. I've never experienced such awful BT connection...never. Besides that issue, it was awesome.

I use BT headphones a lot. So I returned and got an Apple TV 4K and the BT connections is rock solid.

I have been using my CC/GTV for a couple weeks now, and only went back to my ATV for a movie on Disney+ because I wasn’t getting any audio from the app on the CC.

There are a few things that Google can do to further improve the device though.

I have apple tvs and CCwGTV on two tvs. My main tv has an apple tv 4k and a tivo stream 4k with all the tivo stuff disabled. I use apple tv mostly just for the up next feature which is second to none. But android tv comes in handy at times.

Both me and my wife use iphone and she use macbook while i use windows 10 laptop for work. You can say we somewhat invested in apple ecosystem.

Been using google tv for a few days it’s fun and quite smooth. It basically replace my console that i usually use for netflix and youtube. Love it so far.

I miss apple music, too bad the were not available for google tv, wish it were.

So what happens then for user around the world. ie in the 50Hz Territories that need auto Frame Rate Matching support ?

That above really is a major limitation with the CCGTV dongle for such users that want even basic smooth video playback. It's called settings - "Set and Forget"

And what about those that have libraries (free HD > 4K upgraded), of really high quality 4K HDR DV Atmos, purchased iTunes content, where is the CCGTV support for that. ?

Where is the HD audio support (Multichannel LPCM) on the CCGTV dongle ?

The CCGTV dongle is plenty buggy as well, Network connectivity and Stability still needs prompt attention from Google.

And if you have such Networking problems where is the inbuilt (Gigabit) Ethernet port ?

8GB of internal Storage really is limiting (something BTW Google purposely omits from Published Tech Specs), with 4GB of that already taken up by inbuilt Apps and the OS.

Overall you get what you pay for.

Saying there are no CCGTV dongle limitations is deluding yourself.

A bunch of people do not want content "Pushed" in their face either, everyone is different.
