Should I use my laptop or get a Chromecast?

by Tucanrase

I have a laptop with a broken screen, but anything else works. Now I have to decide if I buy a new ssd to use the laptop or buy a Chromecast.

I just want to use it to stream YouTube, netflix, prime video, steam link and maybe some random videos.

What it's the best option? Spend the money to use the laptop or a Chromecast?

Chromecast with Google TV is $90 and comes with $84 in Netflix credit. If you were budgeting for Netflix anyway, that makes the cost more like $6. If that deal happens to be available where you are.

I'm all about repairing and getting the most out of the life of older hardware, too, though. Perhaps with a new ssd the laptop can be network storage for the Chromecast?

I don't understand how buying a Chromecast or an SSD are your options to remedy a broken screen on your laptop.

In the long run the laptop would be more expensive to keep due to the higher energy consumption

I guess the SSD would be cheaper than the new chromecast, depending on the storage you want to get.

But I'd prefer the chromecast since you would have to attach mouse, keyboard, etc. to the laptop. Tried that years ago, it's no fun. These things are not made for TV ;)

Additionally, in terms of power consumption the chromecast should be way better. Not sure if it works with steam link, though.

Why not just connect your laptop to a monitor? That seems like the simplest fix.

i like chromecast, not sure how well it works with steam link though
