Learning about audio pass through

by shazzmoe

Jetstream 4k Just got a new tv, vizio p series 2020 version.

I have a lg 2.1 sound bar connected via optical

On my last tv I would max the sound bar volume and then control the volume through the Android tv.

On the vizio this method has issues with some apps.

Plex: works fine if I disable audio pass through

Youtube: works fine no settings changed

Prime video and Netflix: if the Android tv is set to anything besides mute, the volume is maxed out from the speakers and I have to use the lg remote to control volume

Should I be looking at a tv or Android setting to fix this? Is there a way to disable audio pass through on all apps like I can with Plex

Edit: I've tried just about every audio setting I can find on both Android tv and the vizio with no luck.

I wonder if a shield would fix the issue?

Edit 2: after doing some reading in some old Nvidia shield forums I found I can solve my issue by disabling all surround sound on the Android tv. I think this is fine because I have a 2.1 set up. However if I had a 5.1 there might not be a way to solve it. Possibly with arc but it's unclear to me.

Does the TV have a HDMI Arc port and does the soundbar have a HDMI input? If the answer is yes to both questions then I'd recommend connecting via Arc instead of optical, then test your volume.

Other than the volume issue, HDMI has more bandwidth than optical and is the preferred connection method.
