My mind is a little blown at how awful the Xiaomi Mi TV Stick is - anyone else having this experience?

by CommieColin

I received a Mi TV Stick as a Christmas gift from my brother and holy moly hot dog - I can't believe they shipped such a broken product.

The lag is INSANE. Video streaming freezes/crashes the device frequently. The Hulu app in particular is unusable - I've seen this referenced in a few reviews of the product. Is anyone else here dealing with the same issues? Honestly at this point I'd cut my losses and try to return it, but it was a gift, so I can't.

I also read that the Mi TV Stick used to work very well before a software update. I'm a huge fan of Xiaomi from a hardware standpoint, but they're the worst when it comes to breaking their own products with unstable software updates.

Was really hoping to replace my old Chromecast, but at this point a five year old device is outperforming a brand new Mi TV Stick.

Had the Mi Box S for a few months now and my experience couldn't be more the opposite so it's probably a matter of the specs, but also, yeah, software update.

And yeah, the Mi Stick was an option for me, but even without investigating the specs, I knew there'd be a difference. Not that you had a choice in the matter

Edit: yeah, I see the Mi Stick comes with 1gb RAM while the Mi Box has 2gb and I guess that extra 1 GB makes a difference

On an older H6400 Samsung 1080p telly, it's working perfectly fine for YouTube, Prime and Netflix, not a hunch. If you hit the voice assistant button by accident though, you've summoned a great lag from outer space .. that's the only gripe.

I have mine placed on a cooling fan and it works great. Streaming full Blu-ray rips on Plex without stuttering is doable (which I was not expecting). Though the RAM is definitely going to be a problem here so it is best to use only one app at a time.

Afaik, if you received a second batch unit (the one with the HDMI extender), you'd have better heat dissipation and system responsiveness (plus the most recent update won't break the device).

I'm pretty sure it can do most tasks, it's just going to be slow and all.

And don't use the TV's USB port for power. Just don't.

I use it every day and I have no issues with it (I mainly watch Plex and YouTube) BUT my mine is not behind the TV right next to a wall, mine is literally suspended in the air (because my TV is ceiling mounted) so it has no overheating problems. Cooling is everything when it comes to hardware like this, unfortunately.

I hope you'll find a way around this and will be able to enjoy it, good luck!

Are you using the power supply which came with it, if its getting power from a usb port it can slow it down as well.

I'm really surprised what u wrote and those issues.

I have Mi Stick about 3 months and most of the time I'm using it for IPTV stbmemu, youtube, netflix and everything works perfectly fine.

Yes can confirm that device is a bit slower when opening applications but video playback is fine no lag, no delay between sound - video it's just working fine.

Do u try factory reset full wipe? if not working properly after that it's probably a "broken" so u can ask your brother to replace this one with another one from the store where your brother buy it.

PS: my device is from eu with latest patch which was around 600 mb.

It's a common issue with the stick. If you want to go extreme you could open it up and slap on a fan ...

I haven't owned any devices similar to a Mi TV Stick but i do know that Android will limit the maximum available CPU frequency if the SoC gets hot... And if the manufacturer of the device edit trottling settings badily, the user will get the CRAPPIEST performance ever while the device is running hot. So, just try to cool the stick down with a cheap usb powered fan... :)

Mine works perfectly. Runs Apps GUI smothly and true HD fine in my opinion.

One of the things that give problems on this device is the usb that you are using make sure its More than 500 mA the ideal is 900 mA. Overheating is also an issue for some users. If it overheats the system lowers the cpu operating values. So make sure your tv is at a cool place. Although i tested mine on a hot room at 29 degrees and everything worked fine for me. Finally some models have trouble with 2.4 ghz WiFi so you might need to getcloser your router for it to work properly.

My experience for my Xiaomi Mi TV stick is that for its price it's the best stick ever.

For what i read around the internets, your experience may vary.

It's all good but with a fatal flaw. The heat sink is too small leading to crashes, slowness and unpredictable behaviour.

Fix:

buy a cheap aluminium m.2 ssd heatsink, carefully remove the casing, join the new heatsink in reverse together using thermal tape provided. Lightly scotch tape over them together to secure. The remote will still work but the on/off light would be a little hard to see

Truly ugly but works

Have no issues with mine, but it is basically used just for Netflix. I'll be replacing it soon as I'm tired of using two separate Android TV boxes (my Skyworth one is not Netflix-certified, so is there for my Kodi library).

I find that when finishing watching just restart it. And it works great next time.

Can you all check if fin your Google Settings it shows: Xiaomi Aquaman Tv or something similar? Everytime it shows up and when I try to revoke it's permission thinking it just logs out my TV, it wrecks my whole Google Home setup...

I bought a second batch stick and have used it for almost 18 months now. I stream 8-10 hours a day at the office (YouTube, Netflix and Prime Video) and it has worked like a charm. The only timed it crashed is when I installed a VPN (Nordik VPN I think...) it overheated af and never loaded... also, one time I played Asphalt 8 like for an hour and it started to crash and stuff... May not be the greatest device out there but for the price it has done what it's meant to do...

It's pretty obvious that you can't operate android tv with 1gb ram. If you have any standards, nothing less than 3gb.
