Can all Android TVs be updated to current?

by chrish_o

Hopefully I can get some help and advice here - I have an older (2-3 years maybe) Android TV that I can’t install certain apps to because it’s running Android 5.1 (Phillips 43put6801/79). It shows there are no updates available when I use the menu to update.

Am I missing something or am out just out of luck with an older tv? Although I’d say I’m pretty tech savvy I have no experience with Android stuff.

You are just out of luck. But look into the new google tv (Android tv) it's a dongle with remote, but then you get the new android tv 11 and the newest updates in the next couple of years. Brings new life to your old TV

My policy is to not buy bundled things, including bundled "smart" assets. For a TV, find the best panel you can find, preferably without any smart features, and add a external device to make it smart. One that can be replaced in a few years when Google inevitably kills off Android TV cough Google TV.

This approach had worked well for 10+ years, starting with bundled TV/VCRs.

With bundled stuff, when part of it breaks, you end up with half-useless junk in the best case, and throwing away perfectly serviceable but not working due to poor integration junk in the normal case.
