Youtube playback freezing 0.5s into every video unless I restart

by jtreferee

We have a Mi Box S.

Basically in the past week or two, every single time we wake up the Mi Box and go into youtube, when we select a video it will play half a second of the video (or of the advert beforehand) and then the video or advert freezes.

The box itself isn't crashed as I can go back to YouTube or the homescreen etc. and use the rest of it as normal.

The only way to get youtube playback to work is to restart the mi box. So, if we want to watch YouTube these days it goes like this: waken up mi box - restart mi box - wait a couple minutes for it to restart - play. It's frustrating.

Things we've tried:

  • waiting on frozen video to see if it restarts after a short while (nope)

  • force closing youtube app - nope, have to restart mi box

  • uninstalling updates to youtube app - nope, playback still freezes both before and after reinstalling the updates

I'd be grateful for any pointers

Not really a solution, but you could try to sideload SmartTubeNext.

Same problem here on the nVidia shield but it only happens after using the CBS All Access app.

I started getting this issue with the new update, cut my losses and just bought a new Google TV Chromecast dongle. Going to check in a month if they have a new update but couldn't stand having to reboot daily, sometimes an hour or two after the last reboot.

Please report all the issues you have with the app at the YouTube Feedback website.

Same here with every video app after last Android update, its not a Youtube problem

I'm seeing the same thing on Nvidia Shield Pro and the Shield tube. Restarting fixes it for a bit.

I had the same problem. Watch shows all day. Next day I wake the box and all videos froze. I read on another link that you go into setting and enable Cec setting and all works great again. Hope it helps.

Glad I'm not the only one having this exact same issue.
