Sony Android TV

by _Count_Zatara_

Hi Guys;

I am a bit confused. Do I need to use an Android TV box if I buy a Sony Android TV?

My TCL gave out and I am in the market for a new TV. I used a Xiaomi Mi Box with my TCL for Kodi and it was a pain. So, I was hoping that buying an Android TV would mean that I no longer have to use my Android TV box.

The newer Sony’s have a faster processor so the Android TV experience is actually good. You shouldn’t need an ATV box separately anymore.

I just bought a 950h late last year. I use the Android software on the TV and I am totally happy. Plex, Disney+, Youtube, Netflix, Hulu, etc all work well at 4k over Wifi.

I bought an Android TV Bravia a few years ago and it was sluggish and a bit buggy so I ended up ignoring the Android TV built in and using Nvidia Shield Android TV. I guess the more recent Bravias have better hardware though.

that's exactly what it means, you won't need the box anymore. unless the tv is too terrible/ not updated that the box experience is better. should be fine with Sony tho.

My Sony TV has Android TV, you can install kodi on that. It's a bit slow though. But if you don't mind that, it's gonna work.

I bought the Bravia 950G and have not touched my android box since. It is snappy with Kodi, cyberflix and Plex. I stream 4k Dolby vision without problem. Hope this helps!

Short answer-No you do not.

I bought a midrange Sony in 2016 and although it was sluggish at first it's now totally fine in all the streaming apps I use since the various OS updates optimised things.

If you buy a Sony Android TV the choice is yours. You can use its built-in Android TV OS, or you can connect just about any streaming device to it including Android TV such as an Nvidia Shield, or a Roku, any Amazon Fire device, an Apple TV or just about anything else provided you have a free HDMI port to connect it to.
