The Future of Android TV

by Mappy42

What would be your ideal TV OS or what would you wish was fixed, alter or changed from Android TV?

Does the add riddled Google OS anger you? Would you change your device because of it? Or do you like this direction?

My Personal Teaks and Suggestions;

1)Auto frame rate 2)Better user management 3)More support for app dev from regular Android 4) more consistent purpose of back button/ remove ' are you sure you want to quit this app' message 5)more uniform keyboards as some apps have an alphabetical list which I hate 6) a too watch list and seen list built into the OS for each user and from every app, maybe combine this with live TV/ live streams 7) never show adds in the OS this is tacky, maybe make smart suggestions of shows and films but give me the option to turn this off

I'm not a Dev not my any means, for any that are, are any of these hard to do? Or is it just the shear number of apps/devs that makes this difficult?

Overall, I am very happy with my Shield. It is solid, AI upscaling works.

Yes, frame rate matching could be better but past that....what else do I need.

Profiles would be nice but most apps have them now anyways, so that's covered.

Perhaps better non android tv app support to fill the gap. Force rotation built in, better mouse support.

These are just little things though. We have no cable, just Shield and it is fantastic.

Android TV, but Nvidia Shield level of smoothness, compatibility, and support.

Android TV needs definetly auto frame rate matching. Devs need to look further than US and other countries which its content is 30/60 fps. It's so annoying to watch a show or film that's not crystal smooth...

That's why when somebody says to opt for an external tv box like Nvidia Shield TV, Mi Box, Fire TV, etc. I keep skeptical because of no frame rate matching support. Till they add it, I agree to buy a good tv with good smart tv operating system like Android TV, Web OS or Tizen. At least they have the main apps.

As a person who uses accessibility features a lot, the main thing I request is consistent Closed Captioning style based on Android OS Accessibility setting. It’s really a mess! Most of legitimate service app apps I use (like Disney+ Hotstar or HBO GO) uses their own setting which often not having the necessary setting to make the captions more readable. I don’t know about Netflix since I haven’t subscribe it yet (can someone confirm?). The only third party app that I have seen utilize this is TiviMate (kind of ironic because most of legitimate service app has worse accessibility settings than a “grey area” IPTV player).

I also wish better integration like movies or shows recommendations based on apps I installed and content I watched from those apps. I know Google TV have this but it will take years before Google release the OS globally (still not available yet here) and most devs will simply ignore this feature.

I don’t mind the ads but I am sure it will never happen in here, because of lack of content services and Google’s unwillingness to sell their product here (Google just released Nest Mini officially here and that’s it). I just want recommendations feature that I often see in Google TV (but it may not happen too just like the ad feature even after they release it globally).

Also, make Android TV box act as hub for Google Home devices without having to buy separate hub.

Controller rumble over bluetooth. Still not there after all these years.

One of the reasons I switched from a Fire TV to the Nvidia Shield TV was because of the constant ads. So yeah, this does anger me. But, at the end of the day, with Android TV, you get a lot of control over your device. If you really wanted to, you can even change your launcher, which is something I appreciate. I’d love to see built-in widget support in the future honestly, but not sure.

Frame rate matching.

I can't believe it's still a thing. For a media player, jittery playback is a deal breaker.

Please.

And Plex and Kodi are able to do so, it means this is technically possible.

So why aren't other apps forced to do so /are doing so.

I can't watch any British nature documentary because of this issue.

Google TV is great

Agreed!

I've noticed that everything that is not Android TV has high potential to loose YouTube, Netflix and other streaming services within a few years.
Android TV only for me from now on.

I love my Mibox, and my recent find, a $35 chromecast with google TV.

They both perform rather well, and the fact that androidTV allows modification pretty easily is amazing. Fire sticks are always so difficult to modify, and rokus can't even be modified. Android TV is just one of the best for customization that I can find.

Recently, with my purchase of the Google TV chromecast, I found a couple of neat tools. Wolf TV launcher, is amazing. it removes all the ads, and just gives you the apps you want. The other tool is that button mapper works perfectly on Android TV devices. This allows Firefox TV to work, and allows you to remap the home launcher.

That's really all I need, it makes it like the Roku interface (by this I mean just the apps), but with your own apps and it better support for most things than Roku ever will have.

Also, support for ad blockers, VPN capabilities (proton VPN is the other tool I found) and you're able to play movies off your own devices flawlessly. Mixplorer is amazing.

All around, I feel like Android TV is just a much better fleshed out experience for TV devices. It is so much better than roku, Apple tv, and fire stick.

the one thing I really want from Google tv, is to have the ability to change your own home launcher. That used to be a built-in feature of Android tv, but they removed it recently. and I wish that device manufacturers would keep up to date with the Android TV versions, cause they keep adding better and better features.

One more thing I just thought of, Google TV has no zoom feature anymore. Is this an Android version issue? Or specifically the Google chromecast? Because it's really annoying to have Kodi's navigation buttons halfway off the screen.

I’d like to see my 2019 Philips TV updated from Android 9 to Android 11. I don’t even care for the new Google TV UI, just having the core Android update would please me greatly for performance and security reasons.

What would be your ideal TV OS or what would you wish was fixed, alter or changed from Android TV?

Well, Roku and TiVo aren't available where I live, so Android TV is the best I can get, and I'm happy with that, as long as I get a certified device (i.e. not one of those Chinese off-brand or no-name devices that often ship with piracy apps preloaded).

Does the add riddled Google OS anger you?

Yes, based on reviews I've seen.

I wish Google just offered a way to revert back to the regular Android TV interface, as it's reminding me of the mainland Chinese market versions of Xiaomi's Mi TV series.

If they did, then most Android TVs and TV boxes would already be running Android 11 by now, and Google TV could just appear as a separate app with its own channel on the regular Android TV home screen, but with the option to show or hide apps on its home screen, sort of like launching one third-party Android launcher from another.

I have a Prism+ Q55 (basically a Skyworth model 55UB7500 adapted for the Singaporean market, with some welcome changes) , and it has a Google Play button as part of its streaming service buttons, which is mapped to open Play Store, but I imagine that in a future update, it could be remapped to open Google TV if they allow that to run as a separate app.

I would like to see multi-user support on Android TV, but I still feel that the existing multi-user support on Android for tablets can be improved, specifically in which I wish I could just share apps, files, and other data from one user account to another, instead of requiring a separate Google account for each Android user account.

Android is an open source OS platform. Its the users of the OS like Google and TV/Streaming device manufactures that puchase licenses of Android in order to create UIs or User Interface software on top of the Andriod OS for their products. Its them who create the apps, settings, and navigation..
