[Mi Box S] Why Is SBM Share Slower Than Netflix?

by guyuz

Hi, I have a Mi Box S connected to WiFi, as well as a PC. For some reason, when watching videos from an SMB share on my PC, I experience plenty of buffering. At first, I thought it had something to do with connection speeds, but in fact Netflix videos buffer very fast.

Is there something I'm missing? Maybe the Netflix videos are significantly more compressed?

Thanks!

Netflix adjusts the bitrate in real time based on your bandwidth to the home.

Streaming a local non-transcoded video doesn't.

Could you rule the wifi out by connecting using Ethernet cable?

I can even play 30GB TS file over SMB on my 5-year old Android TV just fine when connected using cable.

Try something that uses UPnP (Like Plex, Emby, Jellyfin). My ATV is very low over samba too

Use plex, I believe it has some magic proprietary buffering stuff that makes playback MUCH smoother (this might be completely wrong, but in my experience it's way better)

I have the same issue. I read years ago that it's because SMB was never meant to be used to stream media. I have better luck using FTP or SFTP protocol.

I stream multi GB files on smb share easily on 5ghz wifi connection using miXplorer and mxPlayer set to software rendering.

Best thing about mxplayer is that it remembers last played location for all my streams.

Some video codecs are not optimized for streaming. Try converting to something like h265
