Is it possible to change the OS on a Hisense Android TV?

by tofudisan

We bought a Hisense Android TV from a certain box store famous for blue shirts and geeks. Anyway I pretty much hate the TV now. The picture is great, but that is where the good ends in my opinion. I was having all sorts of problems with the TV becoming unresponsive. Hisense finally emailed me instructions on how to load an OS update through USB. But their update seems to be only some minor cosmetic crap, and is still just as buggy as the original OS. Back in the day I used to root my Android phones, and change to a different version of Android. This got me to wondering if this is possible with Hisense Android TV. Is it possible, and are there other Android operating systems that people have had success with loading directly to the TV?

Just get a Chromecast with Google TV or something. You will be much happier.

I have found that rebooting Android TV on my Hisense helps resolve the hang ups (but they eventually return in time).

Just turning the power off on the remote only puts it to sleep. To fully reboot, it's buried under settings at the top right, Device Preferences, About (all the way at the bottom), and then finally Restart.

Unless it's completely unresponsive and then just pull the plug for a hard restart. Unfortunately this is just poor hardware running the OS, there's a reason these TVs come at such a low price comparatively.

Like others have mentioned, you may consider the new Chromecast with Google TV for better responsiveness.

No such for TV devices, as many aren't willing to risk their televisions to do the experimenting. You're best off with getting a standalone device such as the shield or Chromecast w/ Google TV. Although if you haven't tried this tweak yet. I recommend:

Enabling Developer Options (Settings>About>Click Build Number 7 times)

Go to developer options

Scroll down until you see the animation options and change them all from 1x to .5x. Or if you don't mind zero animations you can turn them off completely.

You can also limit the amount of background apps to help it along (no less than 3)

Ive been android fan boy for a while too and thats basically why i bought my hisense tv. I bought it basically for its display and use a roku ultra device to stream instead of the tv apps. Nice tv for the $$$
