We should be wary of Android TV/Google TV's new user interface

by Adventurous-Drink-23

I am from China, sorry for my grammar mistake in English.

Recently I have explored Google TV's new interface and heard that Android TV will receive that shortly.

The transfer from the old interface to the new one is extremely dangerous for end users.

โ€‹

According to Google, the new user interface is more focused on content, but I don't think so.

Google TV

Firstly, what you see on your home screen is completely controlled by Google.

Remember during the Google TV setup, it asked you to link your streaming account to Google in order to receive the recommendations in this "For you" tab, which means everything you see here is not pulled from the apps but pulled from the Google server. Google has complete control over what you can see and they got your highest attention once you turn on your TV.

Secondly, the gradual weakening of the concept "Apps"

As you can see in the new interface, Apps tab has been ranked second to the last, and on the home page, the apps are no longer on the top. Google want you to use their recommendation services rather than using your apps individually. But, Smart TVs are all about apps, which means end users should determine what they want, but not Google forcing users to watch the recommendations. I'm not saying that Google will cut the App feature and preventing users from accessing them, but based on my guesses and my experiences using some Chinese TV ecosystems, the concept of Apps will be weakened until it disappears. For now, if you want to install apps outside Play store, it has been much more difficult since the release of the new Chromecast.

The possible future of Google TV and Android TV

You may not know much about the Chinese TV market, but I think Google TV will go in the worst possible direction if we don't pay attention to this issue.

1. the disappear of "Apps"

Let me first show you something:

Xiaomi TV launcher

This picture above is the launcher of Xiaomi TV in China. Every corner of the home page is filled with ads from streaming platform, the "Apps" page is narrowed to that green box in the middle-left. Any of the tabs on the top is for ads and subscriptions. But the worse thing is Xiaomi does not allow you to replace the TV launcher. To me this looks really similar to Google TV, and the experience of this TV launcher is terrible.

2. ads before launching

Watch this video on Bilibili:

Ads on Haier TV

The experience using this TV must be terrible, I don't what my Google TV to be like that.

3. What if I want to skip the ads through an external TV box?

They will put the ads into the HDMI signal:

Xiaomi TV ads on HDMI

How to avoid that?

For now, you can go inside your Google TV settings and turn on App mode, that will disable all the content pushed to you from Google. But who knows what Google will do in the future, we will see.

At that time, I believe there will be people finding ways to disable them through settings, apps, adb, or even proxy, just like what everyone is doing in China to get rid of these ads. But that is difficult, not all the people knows these things. The only thing we can do is to have independent thinking, and be aware of the feature updates from Google to avoid being controlled by our TV or OS manufactures.

The most sad are the zealots in comments defending Google and after market addition of ads on our Android devices.

The arguments of type they aren't ads if they are useful and just ignore them dude are straight from fanboy land.

They mimick clearly Fire OS model and maybe on their Pixel phones they will include ads on lock screen as Fire OS tablets do... ๐Ÿ˜‚

Google of 2021 isn't the same company of 2019. They are under major restructure. We can expect anything.

iOSfication of Android continues too. It's sad because Android had his design language and there is no need to mimick Apple at anything.

kronicoutkast

This is kinda what Amazon did with their Fire TV platform and the primary reason I switched to the Shield TV.

I really hope Nvidia doesn't make the switch.

pawdog

That's a pretty terrible looking interface, I don't know how much is just lost in translation, and Google TV is along long way form anything like that. The new Android TV UI is very good though. Recommendations are relegated to their own section and so far only include 2 mandatory services. It's already much better than the Google TV interface. It's like Google is already seeing the error of their ways. Hopefully Google TV will migrate to what Android TV has done instead of the other way around.

Google TV aren't the only tv is. If they try some of the shit you mention they will lose almost all of of their market share

TurboFool

This seems like an overreaction, and not one based in realities. Apps aren't going anywhere and they can't go anywhere.

This is why I'm running ATV Launcher Pro on all my devices that aren't Shield Pro's, that have the good sense to neuter all this ad-ridden nonsense!

jakegh

"Apps mode" still shows ads, it just disables the personalized suggestions. So that isn't a solution.

MinutesFromTheMall

As one who believes in some conspiracy theories and is cautious about big tech companiesโ€™ motives, this all sounds like a bunch of nonsense. If Google does do something like this, Iโ€™ll simply drop them and switch to Apple TV or Roku.

ami_ayan

I don't think apps are going anywhere. Though I understand your points regarding ads. I have Mi TV in India . But in Indian version of mitv you have both the stock android tv launcher and patchwall launcher preinstalled so I just use Stock launcher. And google will put ads in future android/google tv eventually , even Sony has put ads on their android tv via OTA. So , by paying less at start , you will eventually pay more with your precious time watching ads , that is the future I guess.

hboinay

LMAO, google tv may be inconvenient for some but saying it's "extremely dangerous" is a bit over the top ๐Ÿ˜‚

oldtimefighter

I agree on a number of your points but to say the new UI is "dangerous" is a little dramatic.

You are in China and this is what you are worried about?

CuvisTheConqueror

Honestly, I know people are super down on Google TV, but it's the kind of interface I've been wanting since Boxee ceased to be. I kind of want the concept of apps to go away, at least from a TV standpoint. I want to just be able to access content quickly and easily, and not have to worry about which service it's on. Reelgood is almost there, but it isn't quite as integrated into the system as Google TV is.

oramirite

"Apps" have always been a bulky way of interacting with content. Your concerns about advertising are 100% correct, but as far as retiring the idea of "apps", I'm all for it. At this point these things are all just services with APIs and that's what should be leaned in to.

Toothless_NEO

Personally I use Wolf Launcher on both my Android TV and My Fire TV.

JimboLodisC
  1. I have an app row still.
  2. I don't see this happening but I could be wrong. I know some TVs do this, but this is an optional streaming dongle that can easily be ditched. I just wouldn't make this assumption at all.
  3. Again, this is the TV manufacturer. Samsung gets crap for it too. People can easily eat the cost of the CC and go to Roku or Amazon or Apple for their streaming device needs. It's more difficult to return an HDTV or find one that won't be immune to injecting ads into the UI.
VonRocks

If i see more content, better content and newer movies and programs, i don't care so much if there are ads. Only thing i want to keep clean is launcher. The main TV interface. I might wanna keep TV on but don't like if it starts to show ads by itself or keeping sound while I'm having guests. Also, too personalized interface with recommendations might be inconvenient (while having guests). If the launcher is heavily customised to you by the content you watch, everyone knows whats your political and religious views etc when you open the TV. Remember that I'm using "if". ๐Ÿ˜… The more we can customize the experience the better. I vote for "free" content with ads instead of monthly fee without ads in some cases. Ads should be placed inside the program if you ask me. HBO, Netflix etc should stay as they are. Maybe we need incognito mode for AndroidTVs ๐Ÿ˜‚

blazen2000

Install wolf launcher with button mapper, youtube techdoctor uk great info.

some of you people take your dislike of ads to irrational lengths

Google simply have noone with selling skills. After using android tv for a week I binned it. All they are doing is making the user unhappy by forcing them to have apps or services they don't want to use. My android tv came preinstalled with netflix prime and Google play video and music which has just been discontinued.

After downloading 15 apps my android tv stick ran out of apace and became unusable.

If an app is downloadable why force it as system apps?

I am sure Google gets more money from apple to keep all their softwares bloated so people switch to apple.

davo_nz

extremely dangerous for end users.

rofl. all the shield users quickly downvoting me because they are scared their high end iptv box is going to explode :D
