Sony Android TV or Google TV dongle???

by BertieBlac

I bought a google chromecast with google tv, thinking i could join the free content age. Then after setting it up i began to wonder if I could've just used my Sony android TV to donthe same thing...install <filelink> etc? Did i just wasted my $50 money buying the google tv cast thing?

Nope. Buy a TV for the panel quality. They do a crap job with updates and buy fixing. In contrast, my 2015 Shield TV still gets updates and posts everything flawlessly (except AV1 and Dolby Vision).

I personally buy a TV for its hardware (ie: number of HDMI ports, display size, picture quality) and leave the smart features out of it when possible.

I prefer to buy a cheap, separate dongle that I can upgrade when it starts to show its age than to be stuck with a TV OS that will inevitably start sucking after a while and end up buying an external device anyway.

Depends on how well your TV runs Android TV and how well Sony supports it. Android TV on the Sony TV will run the same apps as the Chromecast With Google TV so you won't get anything new with the CCwGTV. When you go back and forth between them you will develop a preference for which you like better. If it winds up being the TV then maybe you did waste your money because you aren't using the CCwGTV.

I have a Sony Android TV. I don't know why, but Wi-fi reception on that thing is mediocre. My parents have the same issue with their Sony as well.

Because of that, I get much better streaming quality from my Roku. I bet you'll get better picture from the dongle.

I think you're fine. Besides, the TV software will someday stop getting updates, and will be stuck in time. But the TV itself will still be great. With a dongle, if it gets outdated, it's easily replaced.

What model is your Bravia? And which apps are you intending to use?

I have a 75X900F Sony that the wifi reception is pure garbage, to the point and I’m considering buying a chrome cast with google tv for it.

I've got the 65x950h and use it's Android TV for everything. Weather, smart light control and mostly streaming through YouTube, Netflix and stbemu (IPTV). I find it runs the same if not faster than my firestick 4k which I moved to another nonsmart tv. It's connected through wifi and been solid since day one.
