I'll stick with my Nvidia Shield(s) thanks.

I am glad to see that the Verge brought up the Dolby Vision and Atmos issue on Disney+ in their article. Hope this issue can be fixed soon.

The Verge: "It's just one of two android tv devices we tried for 2021"

While I have the new CC (UK owner), the thing with these articles is that they never take into account other countries.

When weighing up any type of new device for the TV the first question for me is always "Does it have all the UK catchup services on it?"

And while I appreciate that it's a developer issue as opposed to an Google/Android TV one, the fact the CCwGTV here in the UK doesn't have All 4 or Now TV natively on the platform makes it a total non event for me and my family.

I know the option to cast is there, but that defeats the object of the new CC in the first place and it's not something my family would do. They get the remote, they turn on the TV and they expect all the services to be there.

So in terms of money, yes the CC is good value. But if you put value in the overall package, I'd say something like the Apple TV or Fire Sticks/Cubes of this world are actually better streaming devices for most consumers.

I have one, recently bought to replace a Roku. I like it ok. It would never replace my shield on the main TV, but it works fine on a bedroom TV. It has a snappy response, the UI is good, and it has all the streaming apps, except for Apple TV which is supposed to be available very soon.

The is one big downside to it. It links itself to your Google account, and only your Google account. There is no way to switch between accounts, so any Google applications such as YouTube and YouTubeTV will be locked to your account. You can't even switch between family sharing profiles on YTTV, which is ridiculous.

That isn't a deal killer for a secondary TV, but makes it a non starter for a familiy main TV.

I got it to replace the functionality of a TCL Roku TV that has become so sluggish to be unusable even though it is just 1 year and 2 months old. I am not as fan of the Roku stick at all, so I thought I would give this a shot. If they add profile switching, it would be great. We will see about longevity.

No the verge, the best streaming device for 2021 is still the shield pro hands down.

Meanwhile at Cnet: Roku Streaming Stick+

This thing has issues with my Denon AVR

tb21666

They obviously do nothing with it if they aren't aware of all its shortcomings.

Teethpasta

Yeah but I wouldn't get this or any of them that are out. AV1 supporting devices will be coming out this year and that will be the streaming standard for the next decade.

Why the Verge matters?

Since 2014 they didn't mention once the Android TV platform on their media streaming articles but only Chromecast, Roku and Apple TV.

Since 2018 Android TV was the most popular OS around the world and still at 2019 article for media streaming device recommendation zero reference to Android TV OS, Shield or Mi Box. They even ignored the 2015 Google Nexus Player that was popular at US.

So Android TV news or recommendations from Verge no thank you. Now they discovered Android TV?

Maybe Google pay them or promised some exclusive content or interview. Nilay Patel the Apple fanboy approved the article? 😂

I love my Google TV. It's the best streaming gadget at 50$.

slmkdp

Love this device. Gives Dolby Visiion and Dolby Atmos on all except Disney+ while all other gadgets give either DV or DA and not both.

kgyre

Is the home screen and navigation ever not laggy?

But, it's The Verge though

Fuck that, buy a shield.

Admirable_Bus_5097

Can someone tell me whether it would be possible to plug the Chromecast vith Google TV directly into a soundbar for Dolby Atmos TrueHD passthrough?

My TV doesn't have eArc so it cannot pass TrueHD Atmos to my soundbar. I read that Shield would work if plugged directly into the soundbar which would then pass video to the TV. Would the same apply for the Chromecast?

KungFuMonkay

Anything from a credible tech news source ?

Mountainking7

Just bought a Firestick 4k for a secondary TV. I'm more than happy with it (after doing my research and seeing complaints on chromecast). And as a nvidia shield 2019 owner, for the price I paid ($75) with shipping, fantastic device albeit a bit slow by nvidias comparison.

edit: Wolf launcher installed and disabled most amazon services.

I dont agree with the verge

the shitty chromecast got 5ghz wifi bug that prevent it from connecting to 5ghz

and google didnt fix this yet and they know about this problem

midnitte

I... would disagree. The Chromecast with Google TV has been a frustrating experience in negative colors with HDR, poor network discoverability, and repeated videos when casting YouTube.

It needs a lot more dogfooding before I'd say it was the best . I suspect the Shield is a much more pleasant experience...

Wow, I hope nobody else was planning on releasing anything else for the next 10 months, competition is already closed.

Fuck clickbait garbage headlines like this. You can't decide what's the best of 2021 in fucking February.
