Looking for a media player with suitable subtitle features

by tuulevaikus

Hey,

I am playing movies from my PC on my Android TV. I am looking for a player that enables me to play subtitles in my movie collection (browsing them from the folder without having to rename them).

I have tried so far:

  1. Kodi - did not detect the subtitle files in the folders
  2. Kodi spin off SPMC - same as above
  3. Archos - did not find my media library
  4. VLC - subtitles are are located and recognized fine but lag up the movie when played.
  5. Plex and Emby - require me to set up a server on my PC, and if I recall correctly, one of them requires an account which made me wary of trying them; googling also resulted in them having similar subtitle issues as above
  6. mx player - did not locate my library
  7. BS Player, CnX Media player were not available on my device

So far, I'm out of ideas - is there any player I may have missed that would have a simple way of browsing subtitles like VLC but not have them lag up the video when played.

It's weird that kodi can't find the files. What format is your subtitle?

Or maybe those files are hidden files ?

Kodi should work unless you're doing something weird with your subtitles.

I personally use MX Player Pro on Android devices.

You can replace Archos by Nova, which is a fork of the former, they also have a subreddit so you can ask questions and report issues, the developer is always keen to help.

Well i use open subtitles add on. Never had to worry about subtitles again.

Start movie download subtitles through kodi and it renames the subtitles to match the filename.

You can even direct to a custom location.

Kodi will do it...

You might have to tweak the timing..... Or browse for the subtitle file.....

All of which is very easy to do

I use Kodi and VLC for this. VLC these days because of a bug with SMB in Kodi in the latest version. I can tell you that Kodi and VLC both read the subtitle file from the folder where the video file is.

Remember that the file should have exactly the same name as the video file. Also in Kodi sometimes you must renable the subtitles option for the video you are playing, happened to me everytime. The Subtitle file should be in one of the supported format and in the same folder as the video (not on another folder inside the folder where the video is). Also I believe that recently you shouldn't use a compressed subtitle file (but idea anyway if you ask me).

If the video lag, you should check the medium from where you are playing that video. Mine read from a HDD connected to a Raspberry Pi 3 without any issues.

Also for the subtitles service. You should select a subtitle compatible with the video that you are playing, this couldn't be easier than in Kodi. Subtitles.org usually failed for me with an error of username & password. Subscene works like a charm and a couple of others.

I usually download english subtitles instead of spanish (my native language).

Good luck

I prefer MX Player Pro. Has very good subtitle options for configuring how they are displayed and good support for numerous types of subtitles. One thing to note, it requires a custom codec add-on which can be found on the XDA Developers website. You can configure MX Player Pro to navigate across your network, but I use a file browser (MiXplorer) to do that, then set the file browser to open media files in MX Player Pro.

Have you tried kodi with autosub addon? I use that and it does the trick for me

Are you sure that those subs are for your version of the movie? sounds like aren't. can't remember exactly but while playing the file in VLC look for an option to resync the subs or something like "subs delay" that you can set it positive if the subs a way before time, or negative if they're after

I've bought my TV 2 days ago and exactly in same boat with you OP. Only VLC player seems to be recognising external subtitles. And it fucking sucks. VLC player lags like crazy. I couldn't bear its Windows version either due to random crashes and freezes.

You can install BSplayer from APK mirror sites but its desktop version does not even play 4k files.

I'm currently trying to integrate external subtitle to mkv file through MKVtoolnix but it is not very convenient.
