Best way to watch 4K movies on Android TV

by midazz1

Okay, hear me out. I have some 4K movies on my laptop. For some reason, casting them almost never works smoothly, even though it should work fine since my router can handle speeds up to 500Mbit/s or even more. They don't fit on a FAT32 USB drive. Android TV doesn't support NTFS and the Paragon's plugin that makes the TV support NTFS doesn't work either, I can't use subtitles or choose an audio channel with it.

Is there an option I'm missing here? It's 2021, should it really be so hard to watch a 4K movie on a 4K TV?

Thanks.. :)

I use Kodi to access all my wireless SMB2/3 shares.

Android TV doesn't support NTFS

Yes, it does. Your particular box/stick/TV might not, but it indeed does on other devices.

" Android TV doesn't support NTFS "

Not only does it support it but it has worked flawlessly on all my cheap chinese boxes also.

PLEX is what you're looking for.

Also I don't know where you're getting that "Android TV' doesnt support NTSF drives. What device are you using?

I have both Plex and Emby servers, I prefer Emby.

Plex is obviously a good choice. If you want a more focused app ("just" a video player), VLC has built-in support for samba, and it works awesomely.

I have a 1TB NTFS HDD plugged into my TV all the time and has all my favorite movies and shows collection that I like to rewatch. All in 4K and the entire library is catalog by Kodi because I like how it manages everything in categories with minimal input. No issue at all. Android TV does support NTFS. I have TCL with built-in Android TV 9.

I use the AirExchange app to move or copy files from my laptop to the TV over WiFi. It's simple and very fast.

I play 4k videos via wifi from a samba-share. You need to sideload a file-manager to your TV that can access samba-shares and install vlc to play the files. Works for me...
