Is it a good idea to a Mi Box s in 2021?

by deniscerri

In my country the only available options are: (prices convereted to $)

- Mi Box S 70$
- Mi Stick 50$
- Chromecast w/ Google TV 100$
- Random Chinese boxes 30-50 $

I believe a mi stick would be too underpowered for my taste since i like to tinker around with apps .
Chromecast would be the best option but its too expensive here and ordering online would be even more expensive.
Chinese boxes are not worth it

All its left is mi box s but its from 2018? How long do you think it will last until its not supported anymore?
Or should i just wait for chromecast price to drop?

I never had issues with mine, and they keep updating it, it seems . For those prices, I'd go for the mi box, although I agree chromecast tv is a superior device and I'd go for that instead if you happen to see its price drop below $60 or so.

I have both Mi Box S & Mi Stick - both run FINE, fully updated, no issues whatsoever. A few users like to complain about various issues on Mi Box but in my experience having setup a couple of dozen of them, I've run into ZERO.

Streaming, emulators (up to PS2), Steam Link, Live Channels/IPTV, YouTube & Netflix, all run perfectly. They get updates every 3-6 months (latest one in the past week). My only minor gripe can be the odd WIFI dropout IF you have a poor signal, that's it.

The latest launcher update that includes ad's is a bit annoying, but you can use another launcher or ignore them.

If you spend $ 70, you can spend another 30 and you will get Google. Better than Xiaomi . Google Supported more than Xiaomi, and the picture and sound quality is much better. I tried Xiaomi, it did not complete the two years, problems began to appear, the device was standing still and slow surfing the Internet. Trust me, spend another 30 dollars and get something that serves at least three years without problems

If your country officially sells CCWGT, go for it. Otherwise get Mi Box S

i have an OG mibox (no s) and i really like it. it does a great job running youtube, stremio, and netflix... but i bought it second hand for $40

if you can get a used one, go for it! otherwise just get chromecast w/google tv

h.264 hardware decoding is not fixed yet and displays ghosting on darker scenes in motion. It's super annoying to me but I think most people don't even notice it. h.265 and vp9 are fine. Just a heads up if you are planning to play your own files.

ICYMI: The CGTV is neutered with a 32-bit OS (even tho it has a 64-bit chip?) & only 2GBs of RAM under the hood, it leaves much to be desired IME.

Don't even get me started on LauncherX, immediately replaced it with ATV Launcher Pro .

My lady still uses a Mi Box 4K without issue & it doesn't have any of the issues the CGTV does with working with all types of external storage/formats.

SilenceMuseum

I got it a month ago and it's great. I love the external storage support and that was my main point buying it. But it's fast and works great for streaming too. I read about issues with restarting and overheating, but I never had such issues.

I have CCWGTV and Mi Box S which I have to my sister.

CCWGTV is a good little streaming device, which I use for YT, Netflix and Plex and everything runs as expected.

Mi Box S. When I used it, what I did was that I set it up install updates and factory reset it. After that I had no issues with it whatsoever and all the updates installed as expected. Now my sister is using it for Netflix and YouTube and she's not complaining.

I'd advise you to get CCWGTV just because it has Google support and GTV is actually OK. If you're strapped for cash then Mi Box S is a good alternative.

latinriky78

The problem with the Mi Box S is its aging SoC (S905X) but I believe they will keep updating it maybe one or two more years.

You can wait for the Chromecast price to drop.

What country are you in?

tetrisHD

Mi Box S still running things good and fair. And even 4K. I would recommend it.

mohamedmamdouhomran

Go with GCCTV , I'm mibox user and loved the box but hated the bugs

Snsmis

I have installed dozens of mi box s 4k with scarcely a problem. For the price its possibly the best streamer available. I have some clients running amazon fire sticks which tend to need new remotes once every year or two and one client only with chromecast tv which also seems fine but not easily available outside the USA and Europe and therefore not useful to me

Here is my take on the Mecool KD1, Android TV stick. It does NOT have Netflix support, but it now supports Prime Video from the Google Play store. I have retired, my Xiaomi Mibox and MiboxS.

If you are buying the Mi Box S, know this..
Ive hade trouble with connectivity to wifi, in particular wifi strength. I have 500/500 fibre and i get around 5-10mb with my miboxes. Until i did ONE simple thing.
I removed the backside cover/Lid, and BOOM, 200mb instantly.. Its just a tip if you get a lot of buffering.

maratnugmanov

Chromecast doesn't fully support 5.1 sound and for me it's a bigger problem than I thought initially. Mi Stick is slower and doesn't support 4k.

ferrenberg

I'd say it is good if you bought two years ago as I did. It's truly amazing. But, as of right now, there are better options

PacmanjunkPs5

Noooo it sucks!! Mi box is an unstable piece of junk that has a really bad wifi inside. It never keeps contact for more than 10 minutes. Dont buy. I trew both my devices in the trashcan.

oldotamot

Nope I have had issue with my xaiomi mi s box with enterprise networking gear. It’s a pos and I’ll upgrading to a nvida shield instead. My phones never has issues steaming Jellyfin where the pos does

I own both Mi Boxes (not stick) and the new Chromecast. The new Google TV is very very good for its price (though a lot cheaper relatively in the US). I didn't have many of the issues with the Mi Boxes that others did, but I would still recommend the new CC over them, even for the price. It will get support from Google for the next few years where I wouldn't be surprised if Mi Box S support was nearly done.

GeekndGamer1

A lot of issues since the latest upgrade skip it and take Google chromecast 2020 (google tv box)

Stomach_Lopsided

Tkam shkrujt ne pm.

itz_fine_bruh

Its great for casual watching and streaming but I would go for Nvidia shield if you like to tinker around, install apps, stream games etc.
