Universal search in Android TV vs Fire TV

by kyuriousMind

Can anyone who is using both the platforms share your views on universal search? Which device does a better job at searching content across all apps?

TLDR; Fire TV is better due to Cloud integration that does not depend on the device hardware for performance, and have more streamlined catalog integration.

Android TV

  • Text Search : Done locally through the app using a search results ContentProvider .
  • Voice Search : Done locally using controls that rely on Leanback APIs.

Fire TV

  • Text Search : Cloud-based model rather than locally within the app using Amazon Catalog Ingestion.
  • Voice Search : Through global search using Alexa cloud service.

I haven't used Amazon so don't know but my friend said their live tv Integration with respective apps' live tv catalogue is better than Google.

In my experience Google Assistant based search ( assistant button on remote) doesn't give universal results but if I use the type button ( keyboard logo) at top left corner of Android TV Home ( click to type) to search then I get relevant search results from every app like apps in app store, YouTube search results, channel names in channel catalog, radio stations, content from other streaming apps etc.
