Nvidia is top of the line, but you can also get a TiVo Stream 4K or the new Chromecast with Google TV
The only one passing through Dolby TrueHD with Dolby Atmos and DTS-HD Master Audio/DTS:X audio codecs is the Shield, however, the Chromecast with Google TV is apparently the only one that supports multichannel PCM so you can decode those lossless audio codecs as multichannel PCM and still get the highest quality available but you'll lose the object based metadata information.
Give AppleTV 4K a try I guess. I have the Hdhomerun Connect 4K, which streams 4K channels locally broadcast and AC4 audio support is non-existent for most media players. Im told that if it supports Atmos, then it should support AC4 audio and that the AppleTV is the lone media player that supports this.
So far, waiting for my FireTV 4K, Chromecast w/GTV and Shield to get support for this, or I might have to buy a new media player.
I know you don't want the htpc option but honestly I haven't found anything that works better. Added bonus of using HTpc is you can swap gpu cards when you need. For instance I had some issues playing hevc files with a gtx 650 card so I upgraded got a rtx 2060 card for $300 before the card craze and now I play flawless hevc files. All I run at my house is plex and plex does have pass-through audio options. I don't feel like they work as well as Kodi because I have to stop and restart and select my pre Amp every time but it works and our HT is awesome.
Time to kick those streaming devices to the curb......... Purchased a Vizio TV that passes through all the audio codes. Supports all the video formats, HDR, HDR +, Dolby Vision, and HGL (whatever that is). Supports auto frame rate switching on ALL streaming apps....
Yes, I have all the Android boxes. Shield, Mibox and Mibox s, Tivo Stream 4k, and on and on..........
