Logitech discontinues its popular universal Harmony remotes after 20 years in the market

Terrible for Android TV devices.

On my Shield, using the Hub you can add multiple keyboard keypresses for Kodi to have access to all the commands. Plus macros. There are no remotes that even come close.

I really hope someone takes over the Harmony line.

Uhoh, hopefully somebody finds a way to program these if they shut the web front down for it.

Damn love my harmony remote. I kept waiting for a new version with a mic to work with Google/amazon.

FizzyGizmo

Gutted to hear this, I too was waiting for a hardware update. There really isn't any real alternative to the Harmony

ycnz

Fuck.

This is sad news. I love my harmony remote. I just wish they made a version of the 650 that worked with the hub

Not unexpected as with hdmi-cec improving so much the market for all in 1 remotes has shrunk dramatically. Then you have voice controlled devices so the market is shrinking further.

So when my current one dies, what are my alternative options?

nolookjones

Damn, not looking forward to when mine dies, may try and buy a backup if there are sales for the smart hub remote...

I'm looking for a remote to support: TV, Receiver and TV (media) box. Looked into the Harmony and actually wanted to buy one before I read this. What could be a good option for me?

I wonder what this means for their software support. I never like how much of it relied on internet/cloud connectivity. I guess this could mean if the software service also gets retired, we won't be able to program our current remotes.

CEC is perhaps useful to people with one input device who are using their TV speakers.

I’ve tried to mess with CEC, and it’s not going to change the power and input state of 3 devices at once.

Even though everything routes through a fairly new (2017) Pioneer Elite receiver - the CEC problems remain.

The receiver itself, my 2020 Sony TV, Apple TV 4K, Chromecast w/Google TV, PS5, XSX, and Switch all have seem to have their own flavor of CEC, so it’s destined to fail.

I hope my two Harmony remotes last. Is Control4 the only serious competitor? They’re insanely expensive as I recall.

Edit: just read the comment about URC - looks decent. That may be my answer next time around.

They did the same with their Squeezebox radio several years ago. Still using both of mine although app support is getting difficult.

This is why you don't hitch yourself to a "cloud"-based product. The fact that Logitech forced you to set up a bullshit online account should have been enough to repel consumers. But nope... apologists flocked to it and attacked anyone who questioned it. Now they can suck it.

Don't invest in something that can be taken away from you at any moment.

They were great when they worked, but I had 3 Logitech Harmony remotes die on me. Button's would just stop working, the screen would have issues, etc. They were too expensive to keep buying remote that died this frequently.

iissmarter

Anyone know if this also includes the harmony hub (without a physical remote)?

elister

Glad I didn't buy one, when it comes to media player remote controls, less is more. Seeing 20+ buttons on a device is a deal breaker for me. HDMI-CEC is probably what killed the remote division of Logitech.

Plus, I find it odd when I hear people say "I dont need an infrared sensor on my phone" while ok to spend $150 on a remote control, when a $5 infrared sensor and $20 app would have done the same thing.
