I have a 5-6yo Bravia in my bedroom. It got a big update yesterday, and I thought maybe it was getting Google TV, but no such luck. Will this TV get it at all, or should I just pick up a Chromecast?

I thought it would be a launcher update and all android devices would get it.
He won't get it. Sony has confirmed google TV only for 2021 models I think.
Maybe he'll get a modified Android TV. But Google TV will only get new models
I think it will only android software update up to 3 years, means tv that are older than 3 years wont receive updates
I believe you can sideload it if you really want to. I know you can do it with the Nvidia Shield I don't see why it would be any different.
Which country are you in? I see they have added a new tab called discover, which is showing recommendations across apps.
Smart TVs are by and large a waste of time. They are typically underpowered and poorly supported. And if they don't do the Android TV part right, they can make the experience of just watching TV bad (witness the problems in 2015-era Bravias).
It's nearly always better to buy an external box for more processing power and/or better support. In the worst case you can buy cheap dongle type units (Chromecast, Fire Stick) and just junk them when the newest thing comes out.
I'd personally prefer to just buy a screen with a ton of HDMI inputs- no smart gubbins, no tuner even.
