Downloaded apps have a weird sizing on my Android TV

by whatdoughnut

I'm trying to install some apps on my TV. I download them using the Downloader app (From Google Play) and then once I install them and open any of them, the app launches but it doesn't take up all the screen size, it only take a vertical bar from the TV resolution and that would be it.

I tried with many other apks (APKPure, Github...) I get the same issue, the app launches and seems to work fine when I try to navigate it "blindly" but the resolution is always off. Does anyone have any solution to this to make the sideloaded app take full resolution of the TV instead of just ~20% of it.

PS: I even reset the TV but still same issue

Sounds like they are phone apps.

I think you may be installing the APKs for the phone apps and not the Android TV versions. They are separate apps, look for "xyz for Android TV" instead of just XYZ

If there isn't an Android TV version of the app that you're using, I would recommend sideloading an app called 'Set Orientation'. It will fix the size issue for you and make full use of your TV screen.

Some apps might work just fine some don't , so you can try things like screen rotation and lock them in landscape mode :)
