Need to rant (apologies in advance)

by morethanyouare

So my 75" Sony Bravia just updated to the latest Android TV... like many other people here I'm shocked and enraged about the recommendations / suggestions / ads of whatever the fuck they are all over my home screen.

Fucking dancing with the stars and big brother on an app I dont and never will use! No way to switch it off! I am absolutely fucking livid, I feel like my expensive TV is ruined!

From what I have read so far there is no solution other than rolling back to an older OS? Please let me know if there is a better solution

My suggestion:

1- Leave a bad review on the product page of the manufacturer explaining the reason why you are dissatisfied

2- Send an email to your tv manufacturer (probably useless but just in case)

3- Write a 1 star review explaining why we dislike this update it so much on the Google Play page of the app causing this mess: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.tvlauncher

PS: There isn't a solution, only alternatives such as installing a 3rd party launcher

Settings -> Apps -> System Apps -> Android TV Home -> Uninstall Updates

Worked for me, thank fuck. That update is a mess.

My Philips TV just updated to the new launcher, before my Shield which is disappointing..

It's not really got the grunt to run it so it lags a bit, but I kinda like it. it's no worse than the FireTV I have in the bedroom, always plugging the add-on subscription channels

I'm in the same boat. I just bought a 65" Bravia 900H and got to enjoy a brief 24h of the AndroidTV experience that does not shove adds to your face.

I'm kinda torn because I don't want to return the TV (I recently returned a TCL 6 series to get this one). But again, I know this shit is going to bother me to no end.

I searched for some tutorials online and found a good deal of people changing the stock launcher for their Fire Stick, Shield and Google TV. Nothing specific for Bravia Android TVs but I would assume following the Google TV procedure would work.

The launcher that caught my eye is named "Wolf Launcher". ATV Launcher seems fine as well as a barebone app launcher although I don't think it can natively replace the stock launcher.

I must just be so numb to this stuff. I've had Fire TV, Roku and now recently Android. And they all have some sort for "featured" content. Roku is the cleanest, and Amazon from what I remember was the messiest.

But, I don't even notice it any more. My eyes go directly to the favorite app bar and the handful of apps that I use are there, and I click where I am going. Until reading the comments, I didn't even realize that they pushed content that didn't even subscribe too, because I honestly never even look at that area.

Install a different tv launcher

I'd be livid too. Unless they add an opt-out setting, you might be stuck with this nonsense, or be forever applying obscure fixes that could break on the next 'upgrade'. You might think about researching Roku or similar devices and see if you can stomach one of those and disconnect your TV from the internet.

I'm willing to bet the next step will be to play those inane 10 second youtube type ads at 'appropriate' times, like when you press the mute button - play add then mute. Oh god please no.

It’s the reason I attach a smart device and make the TV as dumb as possible. I don’t even connect the TV to the internet. It shouldn’t be necessary to do that to an expensive TV but it keeps you in control of your viewing experience.

A double pronged crap attack from both Sony and Google. I somehow seem to have managed to not be crapped on by this yet but I don't know if that's because Sony have largely abandoned my 2017 xe85 model or if it's because I've not applied their latest firmware update yet (I refuse to) or if it's because my TV is EU spec. In any event this is unacceptable rubbish.

Where did you read this? Rolling back to an older OS isn't even an option.

davpad12

I take their suggestions to my unmentionable apps and watch them for free 🤠. Otherwise you've got a great TV. How much time do you spend on the home screen anyway?

So upvote/downvote content so the algo knows what to show you

By default it’s likely just showing the most popular content, same as Netflix or any other untrained recommendation algo

It's like cyberpunk... Ads constantly in your face. While I don't share the same hatred for ads that most people on reddit seem to, but obtrusive ads on your home screen is unacceptable.

Anyone use a Raspberry Pi with Pihole to see if that blocks these? I don't think it would...

Casey__At__Bat

I was leaning towards Sony since I use a Tivo Stream and it would be easy to migrate everything over and not use the TS4k anymore. I wouldn't mind content suggestion from installed apps, but there's no reason for Google TV to recommend a title or an app that I don't have or want. Google suggests using "App Mode", but that makes Search and Google Assistance unavailable. It's kinda of a crappy solution.

.....I like it

Cryptonomicon63

Exactly how I feel. Just turned my ff'ing Sony into a pile of shit. Next time I will buy the cheap aldi TV

Oh wow. My Visio TV isn’t an Android Based System. And I have never saw an ad outside of an specific APP. Thanks for the heads up ! I really believe ADS are horrible for the mind and they trick us and groom us since we were kids. They have taken over the mind-scape of society.

try to uninstall updates on this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.tvlauncher&hl=en&gl=US

also disable app auto update
