Slow download speeds

by RandomDelta06

I have an android tv running android 10. It's about 18ft away from the router with a brick wall in between. It seems to be getting good wifi strength but I get only 30mbps on download but 57mbps on upload. I have a 60mbps symmetric plan. An android phone in the same room pulls 51mbps on download and 58mbps upload.

Is this normal? If yes, is there anyway I can fix it as 4k streams are buffering because of this.

You don't even say what TV you have? Maybe it has a dodgy WIFI chip?

Anyways if you say you have no issues with a cable but that you can't be bothered buying a longer cable and running it through the house (pita if it's a rental i get it) maybe consider using a powerline adapter? as long as both sockets are on the same electrical circuit then it'll work great.

this might help: https://www.tomsguide.com/best-picks/best-powerline-extenders

Does your router put out both a 2.4 and 5ghz AP? You might have better luck connecting with the 2.4 because of the brick wall if so.

Also, are you able to connect this with an ethernet cable?

Yea, my router is dual band but it's connected to the 2.4Ghz Ap only.

You should try to connect to the 5GHz WiFi. but for the best experience get a good cable and route it through the wall. This is the way.

Plug it in to a 100/1000mbs router or hub.

My shields are on the other side of the house from where my router is setup in my office & there's 2 walls in between, too & I stream all my content 4K & otherwise from my wireless servers without issue.

If your equipment is up to par, then localized interference could likely be the culprit, try rearranging your setup & move power cables away from data cables & the like, tho it could be anything, a TV, something in your neighborhood, you have to trial/error to see what gives you the best results, its what I do every time I move into a new place & before anything else gets setup. YMMV

If you're 5 GHz is spotty in that room. That tells me you're in a fringe area for Wi-Fi. Either run an ethernet cable to it. Or get a device called a power line adapter, that lets you use your existing home electrical cable as an extension to your ethernet

Built in wifi for Android TVs is kinda garbage. I might recommend getting a dedicated streaming box.
