Based on these reviews, I'd say Google fucked up and ruined the Android TV experience.

My son is 6 and doesn't have the disdain for ads that a lot of Reddit has. He saw this and we had this conversation:

Dad, what's this on the top?

Ads. It's part of the new update.

I don't like it.

Me either.

Chazybaz13

I'll be that downvote guy that says I don't mind it, it shows me new episodes as soon as they are out of the shows I watch. I can't keep up with them all and it's convenient.

I was pretty annoyed and upset with this change as well. I tried to keep the original Android TV UI, but you just can't. Eventually the server-side switch is flipped and you'll get ads. I finally replaced Android TV Home with a 3rd party launcher and I'm not looking back. So much for Google's "don't be evil" motto.

Looks like the reviews on Amazon are also starting to show people's frustrations: https://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-Shield-Android-Streaming-Performance/product-reviews/B07YP9FBMM/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_viewopt_srt?ie=UTF8&reviewerType=all_reviews&sortBy=recent&pageNumber=1

Imagine if the front seat of your car suddenly had 2 strangers in it.

They explained that the car manufacturer pushed an update to the car that allowed uninvited, people to enter it and occupy 1/3 of your car. Don't panic, the vendor says, these are Google-recommended strangers in your car.

They don't like the same music you like, so they'll play their own screeching music on the portable boombox they brought with them. And they will put their backpacks on the dash that blocks 1/3 of your view through the windshield.

Some will say "hey, I don't even look at the windshield so it's no big deal to me." or "I like the appearance of those backpacks, so I'm ok with the uninvited passengers."

Others , however, will point out that they paid a lot of money for the private vehicle, and they did not agree to it being a ride share. They also point out that they need to see the entire windshield to drive.

In addition, the uninvited, Google-approved passengers are smelly. They talk about things offensive to car's owner and that are not age-appropriate for their kids to hear.

Let's be honest here, we all screwed up by buying hardware that has an OS made by an advertising company. I'm never making that mistake again.

I used to love Google tv but am I the only one tempted to buy an Apple TV ?

BifronsOnline

Yup, updated launcher sucks. It looks as shitty as Roku's now.

I installed Wolf Launcher and won't go back. Kind of wish I would have installed it a long time ago.

fattymcbuckles

Ads are horrible. Greedy google.

Turn off audio or video previews in Google TV interface

On your Android TV, go to the Home screen.

At the top, select Settings.

Select Device preferences and then Home screen.

Turn off Enable video previews or Enable audio previews.

Modifoid

When I gave my my 1 star review they asked me to give second start rating to the experience of in app ads. Never been asked that before.... That got a 1 star as well. Wish I never updated now.

Not looking forward to the video ads that are apparently coming as well.

iAmSamusAran

Please don’t downvote me lol I was just researching tonight the differences between the new Apple TV 4K and the Shield TV Pro aside from the obvious ones. Was leaning towards the shield until I saw all these negative reviews on Amazon about the ads.

yourintltv

That's the reason I search with DuckDuckGo and not Google.

Google just keeps breaking everything. Android auto doesn't even work correctly you all of a sudden. Everyday I get in the car and I ask for the same things. Take me to work and put on the news. NPR becomes MPR asking to listen to CNN used to automatically put me on to TuneIn but now queues up some rap album called CNN in YouTube music. (Another travesty of you ask me). Android TV was my last hope for Google getting something right. But now my shields have been upgraded to a similar UI to that of the Google TV dongles.

ISeeADarkSail

I hear the Wolf launcher is nice......

greegoree

I am a YT Premium subscriber... why TF do I need to still see ads?!

1_p_freely

Google: "There's so much advertising on TV already that nobody will notice if we shoehorn in some more."

I'm surprised the remote control isn't showing ads yet! (has someone patented that?) Your channel will change after a word from our sponsors!

Banecn

Time to sideload some new home app replacements.

SpacevsGravity

How the fuck do I turn off that showcase/ads featuring all that shite I'm not interested in from the home screen? Honestly fuck Google. Genuinely looking into Apple TV to replace my Shield TV

anim_440

I thought nVidia had done this, and I was cursing their name. After some searching, I discovered this is actually the stock launcher from Google instead. nVidia should absolutely get ahead of this to preserve their own reputation.

What makes this even more infuriating is some of the ads I've seen aren't appropriate for kids. If I turn the TV on for my young children to watch some kids shows in the morning, I don't expect to have sexualised content shoved in their faces. I wouldn't be surprised if Google are violating advertising standards in several countries.

billyvnilly

It's time to cancel your premium if you're paying for it. It's time to tell nvidia, Sony that you don't like their UI and let their corporate guys hit back at google.

FDisk80

I thought you just sorted everything by 1-star. NOPE.

MrMoussab

More and more ads. It doesn't bother me much as I have my 3 top applications icons that I click on exclusively during my use of the device

houmi

My 2017 model for Nvidia Shield now has ads and looks like Google TV Chromecast which I had got for my parents.

The 2019 model which I also got for them to have an experience w/o ads, is still on older UI but not holding my breath.

They suck.

ivanc2002

Yeah I agree, Google basically shot themselves in the foot in terms of Android TV, first it started last year when the "Cinematic Highlights" feature was added. And now with the new design and layout which will also now play video ads automatically with audio, which can actually be disabled in Settings fortunately. My Android TV box only goes as far back as version 3.0 of the TV home launcher using the Uninstall Updates button, but using ADB you can downgrade . I downgraded to version 1.8.7 and it works perfectly, the Play Next, reccomendations from YouTube and other services work well.

7ape

Haven’t updated yet, I guess I shouldn’t?

jakegh

Yep.

Google doesn't care.

NoShftShck16

I've been enjoying it and looking forward to seeing it on my Shield. As long as you can sideload launchers I see no issue with what Google decides to do with the default one.

yogeshchellappa

Best way to fix this nonsense is to uninstall the Android TV Home app update in system applications and then disable automatic updates.

TotesGnarGnar

My Shield has not been infected yet. Is there a vaccine I can use to safeguard or do I just unlpug and wait until this sorts itself out. Im kind of serious. I dont want that shit on my shield.

butthurtpants

Google, an advertising company who also happens to make software and hardware (both of which are absolutely to make it easier to collect information and distribute ads), has added ads to one of its few products which didn't already have ads?

Honestly I don't see the hate for the new Android TV Personally, I think its a lot better.

Negative_Plane

I don’t spend long enough looking at the Home Screen to really care 🤷‍♀️

harambe623

lol why do you think its only $50? Same strategy as amazon and its fire bs, slightly different goals.

Waiting for root

rdawes26

What exactly are you having an issue with? I have the latest update and find it much easier to navigate and Assistant upgrades have made it super easy to do anything. I know my experience is subjective, that is why I am asking.

briankdfw

My Shield autoloads my favorite app upon boot up so I rarely see this new screen. Frankly I don’t see what the big deal is. The app bar is still right there. We’re always going to pick a app then run it then the screen quickly goes away. Easy stuff

therobnfw

I have Android TV built in to my tv set. I use it now and then as I’ve sideloaded a movie app, but my Apple TV will always win. Faster. More reliable. Better UI. No ads EVER.

MDiddy79

Fuckin bunch of cry babies. I swar to Christ....

pawdog

Bunch of cry babies. Nothing has been ruined just because they don't like ads.
