Extending storage of Android TV

by abhinavsays42

Noob question: Can normal pen drive be used as an extended storage in android TV? If yes, can applications also be installed on the external storage similar to memory card?

Yes, provided you format it as internal storage.

Android TV cannot write to normal USB drives because Google is incompetent.

Yes you can. Something I just love about the new Google TV Chromecast.

I just purchased a cheap hub off of Ebay from China and that way get additional local storage and also wired Ethernet.

I use a Mi Box S and bought a cheap USB hub, attached a gaming controller adapter along with a 64GB Flashdrive as internal storage and it works great.

What device do you have? My Hisense prompted for access to the drive every single time I turned it on which was so annoying I finally removed it.

Depends on whose hardware you buy

I read thumb drives are bad. Not sure if I believe that but I replaced mine with a 500gb SSD that I had replaced in my PC. Overkill for sure but it works fine.

You have asked a very broad question my friend...max i did on 128 with 32gb main was 197 apps of different sizes. (Users may experience different results)

Yes, once you attach the USB drive and format it, just go to storage and change that to internal storage. (Sometimes it pops up automatically) so then it will be your “internal shared storage”. Keep in mind what ever you use constantly must be in original box storage else everything in “internal shared storage”. Because the processing of the app will take a bit longer and most of us don’t wanna wait.

Yes, pendrive can be used as internal storage but you will need to get those with good random access performance.
Hence why it is recommended to use SSD.

Fyi, only supported apps can be moved to external storage which is something that most Android TV apps does not support but there's an option under the Developer settings to force apps to external storage.

Hello everyone I'm trying to set my device up on my android tv and it doesn't let me set it up as internal storage. The option isn't there at all...any suggestions?

Yes but some experts have strongly recommended against using thumb drives for expanded storage. Not meant for it and likely to fail very quickly. Although some (like me), do it anyway.
