Walmart's Onn 4k media streamer is a beast and a value!

by jmpz11

I struggled for days trying to get my Chromecast with Google TV to read files from my 8tb hard drive. I own the Paragon NTFS app, and well, it doesn't work because Google neglected to include the Storage Access Framework.

So I heard good things about the Onn Streamer from Walmart... It's a cheap $30 for the 4k version, specs are remarkably similar to the Google variety.

It uses micro USB rather than usb-c, and though not documented, it works perfect with an OTG USB hub with power passthrough!! Whoo!

So I plug in my monster hard drive, planning to see if the SAF is supported and... No need.

This thing can read GPT NTFS natively, out of the box! 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯

This el-cheapo Android TV device is actually better than Google's pride and joy Chromecast with Google TV.

If you don't have one, I highly recommend it. Kodi with a directly attached drive so far is SO much faster than Plex over Wi-Fi.

Nice, likely Walmart didn't spend time nerfing the OS to keep costs down so Android retained it's normal feature set. Where as Google over thought what users may/may not need. Excellent find, thanks for sharing.

The sad part is that the S905Y2 SOC on the Onn UHD streamer supports DV, but I guess they didn't want to pay a licensing fee or something.

roenthomas

Performance-wise, according to benchmarks, it's about tied with the AFTV Stick 4K, which isn't bad competition.

OP, can you try downloading the LG DV demo to Kodi and playing it to see what happens?

No dolby vision is rough for futureproofing... This could be a deal breaker for many users. It is the HDR format used by most and you will see it even more in coming years

I totally agree! If they could just fix the issue where the device randomly freezes up I'd be pretty happy!

hungvn94

Yeah, i just bought this walmart streaming device and pretty happy streaming with it. Except it freezes sometime and need a reboot.

My concern is whether or not this device will receive timely updates. I mean security updates as I doubt such a cheap device will get version updates.

Askmetech

I agree ONN 4k is a value for money. I am really pleased that it supports external USB.

Found a telegram group dedicated to ONN 4k media streamer

Does the onn box have anything Walmart related? Like adds specific to this device. Also any clue on updates or did Google streamline all certified devices?

Tired8281

Hard to get outside the US. I could reship it but that would more than double the price. Dunno why Walmart doesn't sell this stuff in Canada, it's not like we don't have Walmarts.

fishbulbx

Any comparison to the xiaomi mi box ? Been waiting for a modern replacement at about $30.

roenthomas

Ever try PlexKodConnect?

aimyem

Agreed...I got a Dynalink android from Walmart for $30 when they were beta...price is around $50-60 nowadays but Mannnn, what a difference!! Even w an OTG, fire sticks only support up to 32gb. This lil thing came w 16 built-in and supports my 128gb card. None of that amazon bloatware either. We've found ourselves some winners.

Ntfs support would be killer. I hate that the tivo and chromecast don't have it. What's the wattage of the power supply? I'd like to ditch it for a usbc charger when traveling.

I've tried this with 3 different OTG USB hubs that all work with my Google CCwGTV, but the ONN ATV can't see the USB drives. These hubs are USB-C and I'm using a USB-C female to micro-USB adapter that supports data transfer. Is there something else special I need, e.g. a better USB-C/micro adapter?

Picked up one today for $19.88. So far, very impressed.

TeutonJon78

Why the CCwGTV doesn't support exFAT, the now universal cross platform filesystem, and what Android already defaults to for non-adopted storage, is beyond me.

Just recently bought one for a bedroom tv. Having an issue powering up the device after turning off the tv overnight. Have to disconnect the power cable to boot up the device. The remote is setup to control the device only so the remote should be able to power up the device. Is this a common issue with the device? When it powers up, have not had issues using it.

TN_REDDIT

I bought one a month ago and like it. Well worth the $30

brendynmckinsey

Anyone else having an issue with OTG? I tried 4 different flash drives formatted to FAT32 and NTFS and had no luck with either… also tried 2 different OTG cables… kind of the whole reason I bought this thing!!!

normydbison

Use plex and go through a network. Done.

BabyMagikarp

thist hign is no longer worth it now that the Firestick 4k is bouncing between $30-35

motorambler

I picked one up last week just to try it. I've been loving it so far, and it's wifi performance is way better than the CCWGTV that I just returned. At $20 it's a no-brainer & I'm going to pick up a few more of these for all the TV's in the house.

LuckyHelicopter4935

my controller doesn’t work any way to fix it?

cherandy

It's been five months since the last comment in this thread, but I just discovered a half hour ago that this device exists, so I'm searching for information. I've read the entire thread, but confess that some abbreviations used confused me. Like SoC. There are a few others, but I'm not really worried about it right now.

I'm trying to find out if the freezing issue I read about here has been corrected. Also, if it has all the apps I need, or if not, if they can be downloaded. I subscribe to Paramount plus, Disney plus, Amazon prime, Netflix, HBO Max and Hulu. Granted, one is free with my cell phone plan, three are gifted logins. I'm only paying for two. Heh

The other question is, is this device Wi-Fi only, or can it be used with a wired connection to alleviate lagging?

Slick1ru2

Still think the TiVo stream 4K is the best Android tv box under $30.

tungvu256

What otg adapter did you use?

Isolatte

Cheaper is certainly a nicer option. But singling out 1 feature than something else doesn't do while ignoring all the things that Chromecast does, that it can't, does not magically make it a better device.
