HDMI CEC conflict with Mi Stick?

by ProtoxiDe22

Hello there, i have had a Xiaomi Mi stick for several weeks, and i just bought a new soundbar + sub combo for my tv (Sony HT-S350, TV is Lg 47LM640S), since then, my experience with the soundbar has been pretty much hit or miss, and initially i couldn't figure out why. The problem was that many times, when turning on the TV, the soundbar wouldn't turn on, but sometimes it wouldn't, by troubleshooting it for 2 days straight, i have found the cause, but not a solution. If i turn on my tv while the Mi Stick is on, the soundbar won't work, if i turn the tv off again, turn off the Mi Stick with his own remote, and then turn the tv on again, the soundbar works like a charm. so to me it seems like there's some conflict with the HDMI CEC controls, but i can't quite figure out how to solve this. I have tried switching the hdmi ports of the stick and the soundbar to no avail

Is there something i can do on the android side of things that would "disable" CEC on the mi stick? or do you have any possible solution to this problem?

You should be able to go to Settings > Device Preferences > HMDI CEC and then either turn CEC "off" using the "CEC Switch" slider or use one of the other sliders to try to get the behavior you are looking for.

I've got a MiBox 3 and that's how/where the CEC settings are on it. And since it's unable to control the volume through CEC, and I don't use/hate the other options (auto on, input switching and the like), I either turn it "off" or leave it "on" with all the other sub-settings turned "off".

I've also had problems, well more like I'm fighting one right now, and for me, and disabling the "CEC Switch" function, seems to cause new/different problems, with my SB not wanting to turn on when I turn the TV on being the newest.

For the longest time, everything was playing nice, but apparently one of the updates for one or more of the devices connected to the TV/SB has caused things to not play so nice again.

I've got a Vizio TV and SB, and for my setup, setting the TV to CEC "ARC Only", disabling "Eco Power mode" on the SB and disabling CEC on the devices that didn't need or couldn't use CEC volume control, seemed to solve my problems in the past, but well, now my SB either isn't powering on, taking a super long time to power on, or isn't recognizing that a HDMI ARC signal is coming from the TV, so it sometimes powers on, with no sound.

For me, it usually takes a combination of trying different CEC settings on the TV and all/any connected devices that support/have CEC one at a time and a bit of luck.

There are CEC "blocker" adapters and cables out there, they would need to be used on the individual devices that are causing problems, because the CEC bus is just that a bus, which means that every CEC device both transmits and receives on the same bus (wire actually), and then each device decides what to do with any CEC "command" that they end up seeing/hearing.

Some people have also gone and modified their HDMI cable, by removing the CEC contact on one of the HDMI connectors.

CEC is great when it works and a real pain in the ass, when it doesn't or decides to act up.

I hope this made sense and was helpful.

Best wishes and good luck!
