Sony A8 only recognizes Dolby Vision when the file is an mp4 on Kodi. How to make it work with an MKV?

by noodlepen13

Hi there!

I tested out my TV with a Dolby Vision file, which was an MP4, and the TV recognized that it was Dolby vision, and it automatically adjusted the screen's picture profile. The result was a highly contrasted picture that I enjoyed.

This however, does not happen when I use a MKV file. Can someone please explain why this is, and how to make the Sony A8 recognize that it is a Dolby Vision file, and that it can use it's Dolby Vision settings.

The file was streamed via Kodi 19. Any help in this matter is deeply appreciated.

Have you tried other mkv files? May have been an issue with the file you tried.

The mkv may have been made with wrong/outdated tools. MKVToolNix only added support for Dolby Vision metadata recently.

To test try remuxing your working mp4 file using the latest MKVToolNix and it should work

Use Maven's kodinerds 19.1 build with mkv dv support

I can confirm that this problem exists in official Kodi build. My device is BRAVIA X900F. I have tested several TV shows in Dolby Vision from RARBG on official Kodi build and Kodi HDR Edition . The result was that both could play the MP4 version flawlessly, but only Kodi HDR Edition played the MKV format correctly. With the official build, the colour will be tinted green and purple because the TV won't recognise Dolby Vision when playing MKV

The official Kodi 19.1 app does not support DV in MKV format.

You will need to use custom Kodi build from Fandangos or Maven that have been modded to play DV in MKV format & also able to support BD-J Menu.

My Sony A83J can't read DV files in MKV-format at all, neither in Kodi nor with it's own Media Player. Thought this was a general problem.

Can you play DV in MKV-format with the Sony's standard media player?

And by the way: is there a tutorial on how to install a modded Kodi build? I mean a one for REAL beginners. I'm struggling with installing a GitHub Browser... or is there an easier way? Installing from a zip file on a USB drive didn't work.

Thanks and best regards!
