If your budget allows for it, absolutely upgrade to the Nvidia Shield. By far the best Android box IMO. If your budget is tight, then I recommend Chromecast with Google TV.

Depending on price I have a couple of fire stick 4ks a TiVo steam 4K (with TiVo stuff turned off) and chrome cast with google tv and they all work fine I just watch all the regular apps and channels dvr and all work fine

You should have no issues getting any app on a generic android box. May not have the license to run at optimum resolution but should run.

I would recommend, Fire TV stick 4K, Mi-Box, Google Chromecast with Google TV, or a Shield - all good options.

Depends on the app. Not everything is compatible with Android TV.
