Onn Owners - Is the Onn Still Crashing Regularly?

by BiffBiffkenson

I'd seen a couple of posts a few weeks ago saying the Onn box was not crashing much anymore - wondering if that's still the case and maybe there was a fix?

I plugged my $25 Onn stick yesterday and unplugged my Roku. I had abandoned the Onn stick almost immediately after buying because YTTV video repeatedly froze/crashed while the sound kept going. I can safely say it is still doing the same damn thing it was doing 2 months ago when I bought it.

I'd look up and College GameDay audio was going but the picture would be frozen for 30-60 seconds before the screen would go black and then quickly come back on with synced video and audio. It did this repeatedly for the 3 hrs I watched on that TV.

Hindsight I probably shouldn't have tested if it was fixed on week 1 of college football, but I'll be going back to my 3-4 year old Roku stick today on that TV.

I moved mine to the bedroom. It hasn't froze in about 2-3 weeks. I am only using it for a few hours before bed.

It does have some lag when loading apps here and there. But it is workable. It doesn't piss me off like the whole unit freezing did.

4k Firestick has almost no issues 2 years and running.

The stick is underspec'd nonsense, that I get, curious if any of you running the box that has better specs are running an ad-blocker or have you debloated your units?

Still get freezes here that need a reboot

I've had one lock up in the last 2 weeks since I started actually using it every day. There have not been any firmware updates so not sure why it quit locking up so much.

Tried to use my Onn box last week and it was locked up. Tried to use it this week and it was locked up again. Mine is hooked up to a rarely used TV in our workout room so I don't know if sitting in standby for long periods of time has anything to do with it or not. I had the Onn stick before this and didn't seem to have as many issues.

My Onn box freezes..well..not freezes per se...it just loses communications with the remote. (i.e. remote light goes red when you press a button, and you have to reboot it.) but that is every now and then. Wish they would at least do some sort of updating on it and not let it fall into disrepair. Hope this is isn't just a small side project that they are going to sell and forget. It has promise. Especially if you add on a powered usb hub.

Yes, I have one (just to play with) and bought my parents one. They have had such an issue with the crashing that I finally suggested they just get one of the new Chromecasts, which my father just bought today. I wish I had just gotten them one from the start. An update to fix this issue would be great but I'm not too hopeful on ever seeing it.

I found an update for the whole UHD set-top box today, and it also had an update for remote connectivity / stability issues. Haven’t had any issues thus far, one month behind in Android security patches (Aug 5 2021) but that’s much better than it was. FW v1.01.32. Kernel v4.9.180, Thu Sep 2. “Version” 10, presumably Android OS version? New splash screen for Android TV on boot up. Much more snappy overall, though yes TBH it does still lag a bit after heavy usage or much scrolling. It’s still a little underpowered but much more stable than before .. Helped me here, perhaps it will help you too?

Unrelated but an interesting find for me - HDMI CEC worked even if the white Onn remote had red lights on top (which basically meant it lost communication with the box). MUCH of the time when I used my TV remote set up through CEC, I could still use many if not all of the functions of the Onn box except for “jump to Home Screen” but usually I could just back out of most of the apps to get back to the Home Screen anyway. The newest update, which I discovered today, seems to have fixed (and updated!) firmware on the white Onn remote but I got around previous lockup issues by using HDMI CEC ..

For me, I haven't been lucky. They start off great, then it turns off and on/resets on it's own. I purchased another, and I'm currently having the same issue. I've used different cables and TV's.

I just bought it and it cuts in and out.

Piggybacking on this question: I saw a YouTuber say the onn is laggy. Like you hit a key on the on screen keyboard and there's a noticeable lag before the letter pops up. Is that true? Geekbench scores show it's just below the CCwGTV
