Can you block adult content?

by laislaboniita

Hello,

Is it possible to block adult content on an Android TV? I know it's not possible on some TV's because they have TIZEN as the operating system. But on an android TV since Android is customizeable, it should be possible to install an app that blocks those sites or any site for that matter, or am I wrong?

I am contemplating getting one. And if it indeed it is possible, which series are we speaking of?

Thank you!

Yes, very easily. Use a dns provider that filters adult content. Follow this guide all the way to step 6: https://support.nordvpn.com/Connectivity/Android/1615759502/Change-your-DNS-servers-on-Android-TV.htm

Go to the Settings on your Smart TV, usually designated with a cogwheel icon. Head to 'Network & Internet", and then write down somewhere the IP Address (1). Afterwards, press on IP settings (2). In IP settings, switch to Static. Enter the IP address from step 2. Type in the Gateway (router IP) address. Click here to learn how to find it. The Network prefix length should show 24 by default. If it doesn't, then change to it. Now, enter the first DNS address: YOUR.FILTERING.DNS.HERE Do the same for the second DNS address: YOUR.FILTERING.DNS.HERE

At step 7 you input your custom adult filtering dns: Use this one for no interruptions https://blog.cloudflare.com/introducing-1-1-1-1-for-families/

Malware and Adult Content Primary DNS: 1.1.1.3 Secondary DNS: 1.0.0.3

Or try this one if you you want filtering, and adblocking that might break things https://adguard.com/en/adguard-dns/overview.html#instruction

For "Family protection" servers: 94.140.14.15 94.140.15.16

You might be able to on the tv. But you should be able to do it from your router!

Possibly... but it's probably not as easy as you would hope. Android TV is really just a collection of different apps for content providers (Hulu, Netflix, YouTube, so on). There's no one system setting they all abide by.

You'd probably want to do two things:

  • Configure each app individually to limit adult content. Netflix and Hulu offer "kid mode" or limiting content to TV-Y, for example.
  • Disable installing new apps from the app store without password.

Unfortunately, it's not very straightforward yet.

It's pretty much up to the services to provide parental controls. What will you be subscribing to?

Depends on your definition of adult content. You can block adult websites with DNS tricks. For things like your Netflix app, you have to define it there. Several apps are very lacking in that department because they may offer a children's profile but it's trivial to just switch to a different one.

Chromecast with Google TV allows for kid profiles. Look into Google Family Link for kids profiles too.
