I know Netflix dropped support for official Netflix on Android boxes save for the Chromecast, but has anyone had any luck getting the Android TV app working on an unsupported device??? Very frustrating , but fortunately we have a spare Chromecast as well as a Smart TV. Technology advancement at its funest....

Are you sure that the OS is Android TV and not just a repackaged phone/tablet Android?
If it's true android, then you should be able to sideload it
Install DRM-Info app and check for Google Widevine L1.

I had an OTT TV supplier which used their own Android TV box. They had an Android app for phones but the Android TV version only ran on their own box (which could run other Android TV apps). Now their app is available for any suitable Android TV box.
Netflix has not dropped Netflix for everything but Chromecast..
