This is just getting more and more annoying. Clearly by all the bad reviews they don't care about what users want or need and just do as they please.
Is it better to use a custom launcher, or reset the Google app to get the original back? Because when I've used CLs in the past they haven't set as default and then the remote buttons don't work.

You can also disable them via Adb commands if you are familiar with that process. Super simple to learn if not. I do it to every device I work on and it will get you some memory back and definitely speed up the device. Have a great day.
There's a whole mechanism where you can specify which services you have so that it will only recommend content on those services.
But it doesn't do that. No matter what you pick it's going to advertise whatever they are paid to advertise to you.
Custom launcher disabling all recommendations (advertisements) is the only way.
