Can someone explain Google TV vs Android TV? I've literally Google'd it and i don't understand at all.

by TheBKBurger

I just bought a "Chromecast with Google TV", But I see it has Android TV OS 10 on and April 2021 security update, with no updates available...I thought it had Google TV?

My lord why is this so confusing?

Android TV is the operating system. Every Android based TV device, including the Chromecast with Google TV, runs Android TV.

Google TV is a skin running on top of Android TV, used in Chromecast with Google TV and made available to other manufacturers too. It does things like: try to suggest what to watch across all of your streaming services. In addition to being a skin on devices, it is also a standalone Android app for your phone.

Bonus confusion: Google TV used to be the precursor to Android TV, but it went defunct in 2014.

It's a confusing mess because that's the only way Google knows how to roll.

Their marketing team and product branding have always been DOGSHIT!

I'm guessing you're a newcomer, so it's even funnier than you could possibly guess. Back in 2010 Google TV was the name of their first TV platform but then around 2014 they discontinued that build and moved onto their second version Android TV . They are now once again rebranding and semi-relaunching the Android TV platform but hilariously going back to their original products name.

Google trying to reinvent the wheel, then coming full circle back around "is" basically their brand in everything from home products to app development then the Google Graveyard

The launcher and interface on the CCwGTV you have eventually will be what all Android TV's will be running and shipping with. From what I've read some current model TV's are already in production with it.

Google TV is the new interface UI of Android TV and it gives you recommendations from different streaming services. Is it clear now?

Basically Google TV is a rebranding of Android TV with a few different features but all the same guts underneath.
Android tv will be phased out and Google tv will be replacing it.

I can see no reason not to buy a Google tv product, and owning a Chromecast W/ Google tv it's basically the same as android tv just with a refreshed UI and a few neat features. Eg. You can browse the shows from all of your apps on the home screen if you want like it's all one big streaming service, which is neat. However you can also disable that and simply only show what apps you have like the traditional android tv UI.

The Chromecast W/ Google tv can also plug into a hub with power passthrough so you can connect an external HDD for stored media, also an ethernet cable if you wish.

The remote it comes with is nice and is Bluetooth for the Chromecast and has a universal IR blaster built in so you can program power and volume to either work the Chromecast or your tv.

Here’s a list of Google products or services that could be confusing to non geek humans:

  1. Android TV: An Operating System for TVs.
  2. Google TV: A skin built on top of Android TV that debuted on the “Chromecast with Google TV”, which has a remote and a TV inteface unlike previous Chromecast dongles.
  3. YouTube TV: A monthly paid live television service. A completely different offer to YouTube Premium: YouTube with no ads and video downloads to watch offline.
  4. Google Fiber TV: TV service option for Google Fiber customers. It got canceled and it’s currently being replaced with YouTube TV. Google Fiber is Google fiber optic internet service available in just a handful of cities in the US.

Your "Chromecast with Google TV" comes with Google TV, which is the interface you see when it starts.

Android TV OS is the Android OS tuned for TVs.

Android TV is the old launcher / interface.

Google TV is new new launcher. Google TV seems more advanced to me, with better recommendations. Alot of people hate the advertisements. I don't notice them much and sometimes find the movie suggestions interesting.

They are the same , Google tv has different luncher

Android tv launcher better than google tv launcher hands down.

Google TV is just a service to aggregate content from different providers. In the Chromecast it's the main app you see when you turn it on, on Android phones it's an app you install and open like any other app (in supported countries only).

Edit: Check the official website at https://tv.google/ , as you can see, it's a service to help you find and organize streaming content.

What brand tv?

Thank you, I was trying to understand this also. I just bought a brand new Sony television and I couldn't remember if the box said Google TV or Android TV or what the difference was and it was kind of confusing.

Llamrei80

It's the same only GoogleTV is the newer one based of Android 10 i believe.

I will make this very simple. Corrected

Android tv is the os on a tv, that has the app store runs apps like Disney Netflix etc. It is now the definition of smart tv.

Youtube tv is a monthly paid service, like sling, like direct tv now or Hulu live tv. Think streaming live tv service. Use a site like cord cutters.com to get a breakdown between youtubetv vs sling vs Hulu.

As others have corrected me. Google tv is a aggregate of everything? Still a little confusing. https://tv.google/
