Anyone figure out how to remap remote buttons on Walmart's ONN Android TV?

I bought the ONN Android TV box from Walmart for $20 recently. It works just as well as the Chromecast w/ GoogleTV in my opinion.

I don't like that the remote has several hard-coded buttons that open certain apps I do not use. I would like to remap to buttons for YoutubeTV (to play/pause), DisneyPlus (to rewind), HBOMax (to forward), Settings (to app switcher). However when I go to Button Remapper app, and try to remap the buttons -- instead of picking up the code it just opens up the respective apps :-(

Has anyone here figured out how to remap these buttons from the ONN Remote?

It’s possible, I believe you need to unlock bootloader. I’ve never done it before, but someone has on XDA

Elias from AFTVnews.com made some remapping apps for Amazon FireTV remotes that have hard-coded buttons, the apps are specific to a singular button, example like just an "HBO" button app which can be installed via Downloader app. Because the apps are specific to FireTV they don't actually let you reprogram the button on AndroidTV, but the app will at least Stop the HBOmax button from working, so if you accidentally press it you aren't taken to the App if you don't have the HBOmax service. Search AFTVnews blog to learn about the apps and how to install them.

Hey guys! I made a YouTube video on how to take Onn Tv Box from set-up, to unlocked bootloader/root, to debloating (thanks to this thread and several others), adding a custom launcher, to using Tasker to "re-route" the buttons on the remote and more. Do you have Button Mapper Pro? If it can do that (not sure it can), the pro version is required for buttons other than the main few.
