Mi Box S - Misplaced Remote Can't Control TV

by m3appy

Hi

I have a Xiaomi MI BOX S Android 8.1 Smart 4K Mi TV Box HDR Google Cast Global Version. I have misplaced the remote (or I can't seem to find it anymore). I used to be able to use the Andoid TV app to control my TV, but not anymore. It cannot discover my TV. I am on the same Wi Fi hot spot.

I have purchased a new remote on eBay but apparently I need a remote to control the TV so I can start pairing the new remote with the TV. I cannot control the TV, without a physical remote, and without the Android TV mobile app not working.

What are my options? I've thought of resetting the Mi Box, but apparently I need a remote to do that as well. Any help/ideas is appreciated.

Cheers

Try using a USB keyboard or mouse. Then hopefully you can connect the new remote or do a reset.

The old Android TV remote app will stop working now. You will now need to use the new remote features available in Google TV(Google Play Movies & TV) app.
While On iPhone/iPad it will be available in Google Home app in future.

To access the new remote for Android Mobile:-

  1. On Google TV app, via Qucik Settings Tile or in app remote icon
  2. On Google Play Movies & TV app, only via Quick Settings Tile

For iPhone, refer here for workaround(but will still need remote to navigate): https://redd.it/q0o3np

The GOOGLE_TV app has replaced the ANDROID_TV_REMOTE_CONTROL app for mobile/tablets, and basically everything the old app can do is now a built-in service to the GoogleTV app, with a Quick-Settings tile that can open the remote overlay. GoogleTV app for mobile/tablets is the rebranded "Google Play Movies & TV" app which is usually a System App in phones, but if not then it can be installed from the PlayStore. Both the mobile/tablet app and the TV-RemoteService app need to be upgraded to most recent versions to communicate properly. If the old RemoteControl app is no longer working then the TV-RemoteService app on the MiBox has automatically updated to the newest version, and you need to use the GoogleTV app as your Remote.
