Data saved or moved to SSD will be gone if SSD dies. Android Operating System stays on internal memory chip, only Data is moved when expanding internal storage.
Simple experiment, unplug/disconnect the SSD before turning on your AndroidTV. You will then only have access to apps that where never moved to external storage, or were forbidden to be moved to external storage. Can just reconnect SSD and like magic all your apps will reappear.
Android system remains on the box. For Google certified devices anyway, I can't speak for chinese ripoffs
