Complete bullshit. I have an Android 7.0 phone and 5.0.1 phone, both connected to Google accounts with fully working Play Store and Google apps.

Best bet is to not do this. Buy a dumb TV with a good panel and a Chromecast w/Google TV. That way when the smart device dies or becomes unsupported you can just replace that piece and continue using the panel.
Converged devices are a money pit.
