Google TV vs. Roku?

by zipbib

I use a Roku box to watch Netflix, YouTube, etc. on my older TV and love it. I am considering buying a new TV and have noticed that none of the major TV manufacturers include the Roku OS built into their TVs. Are there any users on this subReddit who have used both Google TV OS and Roku OS? Any pros and cons to Google TV versus Roku? I am following the latest news on Google threatening to drop YouTube app from Roku. I love the Roku remote voice recognition search for a show or movie across multiple apps. My biggest complaint about Roku is that it currently does not let me remote voice search within the YouTube app. Thanks!!!

You will own this TV far longer than the hardware will properly run this whatever OS you pick. Buy the TV you want and then buy the set top box or streaming stick you prefer. Making a decision on a purchase on a piece of hardware that, on average, lasts the average user 8+ years, over some sort software that it runs on is silly.

Buy the TV based on its hardware merits, things that won't changes with updates or obsoletion. Then get whatever you'd like to plug into it.

Roku is like the Dosh Network of streaming platforms, they’re always getting into content disputes, and pulling apps. Android TV, Apple TV, and to some extent, FireTV, don’t have those problems. I won’t invest into Roku for that reason.

Roku just wants to sell your data and show you ads. Google wants to do this too, but Android devices are far more open and it's easy to protect against all that tracking. The ability to write and install your own apps is the final deal-breaker for me. I would never purchase a Roku product.

I've used both and I'm sticking with my CCwGTVs. So far Google hasn't had any pissing matches with content providers. The unit supports all the streaming services I use regularly: Hulu, Netflix, Plex, Amazon Prime, Youtube TV, Crunchyroll, Hidive, Funimation, Shudder.

I hate Roku. So many technical issues (such as lyp sync), poor customer service and tons of crap apps. I suggest you buy any decent TV and plug in an Amazon Firestick 4k. You'll never look back.

youtube wil soon not work on roku there is your answer

There's no compelling reason to stick with Roku. Any android tv interface is better.

I used Roku for almost 5 years and switched to a TiVo Stream 4k this year. I'd never go back. Way more functionality and better casting. Lots more homebrew apps like Smart tube next as well that make YouTube tolerable. It's also nice not having to use a PC or phone to add apps to it.

I've never used a Roku with voice functionality before, but I can confirm it works well on Android TV.

I've used a Roku since the first box, and have had as many as 4 of them for the 4 TVs in our house. I actually upgraded two of them a couple of years ago.

Big mistake. Because Chromecast w/Google TV came out after that, and its interface was and is head and shoulders above the creaky old Roku interface. No contest.

I made yet another mistake when the old TV in our bedroom died, and I replaced it with an LG. Then I had to replace our outdoor covered patio TV a year ago, and I bought a TCL with Android TV. I'm kicking myself for not getting one for our bedroom TV (where I still use a Roku). I'm ordering a CCw/GTV when it goes on sale tomorrow for it.

Roku is very streamlined. My 70+-year-old in-laws prefer it. GoogleTV is more for power users with a lot going on. It can feel somewhat cluttered by comparison, but I prefer it.

The fact I can group stream YouTube Music means I'll likely never switch away from GoogleTV for my living room. There's also the matter of Twitch, Plex, and Chromecast support and them being worse or nonexistant on Roku.

Google TV shows you MANY movies from other streaming apps you dont subscribe to. Using the interface that doesn't show random movies is a ticket to dullsville, and it doesn't allow you to use assistant. After a year, I just went back to the Roku.

I used Roku from literally the very first box. I've still got one and I purchased my mother a TV with Roku built-in. That said, I've also got a couple of FireSticks as well as a couple of Chromecast with GoogleTV dongles now.

It mostly comes down to which interface you prefer. FireTV and GoogleTV have similar looking UIs, but I find Google's far more clean and useful. I purchased my first Chromecast w/GoogleTV when my Roku started acting up. I then picked up a second (actually the now $20 ONN 4K version from Walmart) because I liked my first so well.

Back to Roku--I find the interface dated. I don't dislike it, but the only thing it does is show you channels. GoogleTV actually has an outstanding recommendation engine. I have very niche tastes and GoogleTV does a surprisingly good job of finding interesting (to me) content across a variety of streaming services. It (along with FireTV) also keeps track of the stuff you've been watching and allows you to jump right to those shows.

Another salient issue is smart-home integration. Both GoogleTV and FireTV give you direct access to their virtual assistants within the remote and through their various smart home devices. Roku relies on an Alexa Skill (which has poor ratings). I haven't tried controlling it via my Google Assistant yet. Regardless, both GoogleTV and FireTV have far better smart-home support IMHO.

I still have my Roku hooked up, but I only use (which is extremely rare) when I want to access a fringe channel that isn't available on GoogleTV.

A couple of other salient points. I do not recommend the Chromecast with GoogleTV that is made by Google. My remote broke after only a few months of use. Google quickly replaced it under warranty, but it isn't well made. Next, it ships with criminally little memory--to the point where you literally won't be able to update the device or even apps because you'll run out of space. That said, Walmart actually sells what is, IMHO, a superior version for $30 less. It's 4K, has a similar, but much nicer remote, and costs only $20.

One thing to keep in mind is that CJK font support on Roku is shit - dont know if that matters to you.

Main difference is clean and simple (Roku) VS cluttered and busy (Google TV). There are fans of both. Which one are you?

Since you already have a Roku and you love it, you can go with best Android TV, use it until it’s unusable and get the latest roku at the time. I have android and had roku in past. I love roku, it just works

i am using MECOOL KM2, without any regret, and google certified and netflix licensed, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B091F18931 excellent

I'd go with an android based system just to be able to sideload apps like Kodi and ad-free youtube

I'm a longtime Roku user who just got a Sony TV with Google TV built in. Roku is more stable, but Google TV is more fun.

Love that I can download games to the TV from the Google play store. Some GTV apps like CNN just don't work and I have to reboot the TV more than I'd like due to glitches with the software.

My Roku is still connected but I find I rarely use it anymore since I'm enjoying GTV.

Google TV does not support Spectrum/Charter or offer the app for Spectrum business essentials stream. I bought a new Sony 85” with Google TV OS and can’t get access to my television subscription, it’s ridiculous. You would think one of the biggest providers in the US would make sure they were compatible with Sony. I have no choice now but to go back to Roku if I want to include Spectrum. The Google TV OS is very buggy, voice command won’t launch Hulu or Amazon Prime, slower and not nearly as smooth as Roku, but offers a much more immersive experience. If they ever include Spectrum I’ll go back to Google TV, but shocked at some of the shortcoming.

Roku will be dead in 1 or 2 years because of YouTube.
