Adding $6 Ethernet adaptor to the Onn UHD 4k TV box

by PCman1951

As of Nov 2021 Walmart is still selling the Onn UHD Android TV set top streaming box. This is essentially an Android Chromecast rebranded device. While it's runs super with it's quad core CPU and very fast on 5ghz WiFi, I wanted to run it on an RJ-45 Ethernet adaptor and of directly wired to my home router..

So wanted to share this for those interested.

I found a low cost adapter on Amazon for $6.99 and it was a simple plug and play. Brand is JacobsParts USB to Ethernet adaptor. You'll also need the OTG cable that's like $3 I tested my internet speed using my comcast that's a 100mbps service. And I got an astounding 120mbps download speed and very hard to believe 750mbps upload speed. Did the test several times with equal results. There are more expensive options but just FYI this cheap Ethernet adaptor works perfectly on the Onn UHD streaming box.

Man that upload is hard to believe- doesn’t USB2(or micrOUSB) max out at 480mbit? Someone correct me if I’m misunderstanding.

These ONN boxes are on clearance now for $18.xx at my Walmart and the smaller dongle version is less. They run pretty good and I was considering a hub for additional storage. The WiFi is actually pretty strong so far in my use and not yet an issue.

My intention is to play games on my connected tv from a hardwired PC in a different room. AMD Link won't go above 720p, 30fps, but that's almost certainly because of the limitations on the Onn device itself. I'm fumbling around with Parsec instead and although the performance is better the controller lags a bit. I was hoping hardwiring the Onn would do the trick, so I purchased this.

On speed test, I get ~350mbps on 5ghz wifi but only ~40mbps when connected to my gigibit lan with this dongle connected through a 2-in-1 Micro USB to USB Adapter (tried with both usb 2 and 3.0 4-port hubs).

That same cat5e, wired to a laptop, yields ~500mbps. I had hoped that, even if the adapter maxed at 100mbps, it would still be more stable over ethernet. I was wrong.

Does anyone have any other recommendations?

Which OTG cable did you use? If the MicroUSB port is connected to Ethernet cable, how do you provide power to the Onn box then?

Can you please explain what settings you have set? I am trying to get this to work with my "On 4k TV" with firmware version 1.01.33

I have wifi off I plug in my otg I plug in my USB 2.0 Ethernet adapter Nothing happens

I've restarted, enabled developer options, turn on "otg USB" mode in developer options, changed from "charging" to "USB Ethernet", unplugged everything, plugged everything back in. Nothing is working for me... I have verified both the otg micro USB cable works and the Ethernet adapter. I even tried a USB 3.0 adapter.

When you say plug and play, can you please elaborate what your seeing on the screen when you plug it in? Can you please check your firmware to see if you have something different I don't?

Thank you very much in advance.

EDIT: Turns out I needed a powered USB hub. After I ran the USB to Ethernet adapter through the powered USB hub, everything just started working. No settings changed and nothing needed to be pressed. When you go to the wifi menu it shows as connected via Ethernet. Power was my issue. Hopefully this helps someone in the future.
