“Downgrade” Google TV to Android TV

by Pling276

Hello everyone

Just got a new Sony x85j tv, and after setting it up, total shock. Everything full with trash, adds, recommendations and useless stuff. I’ve seen the app-only mode, but this is not what I’m looking for.

I like the stock Android TV on my old xh9005.

Is there any way, make the new tv look and feel like the old? I’ve seen posts about other 3rd party launchers (leanback launcher etc.) but I’m looking for a way to make stock google tv look like stock android tv.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Pling

You haven't got Google TV. You have Android TV, this is how the launcher looks now. This is the new stock Android TV launcher.

The only way to avoid this is to use a different launcher.

Try installing the android tv home (launcher) app & check if that opens or not. If it does replace google tv home (launcher) with the above one either using key bindings or using adb to get rid of the original one. You can install the Google launcher on older android TVs & uninstall or disable the android tv home using adb, it then automatically uses google home as default. It might work vise versa.

Keep in mind the android home will give you the "stock" old UI without ads in first launch. But as soon as it connects to internet it'll change into new UI full of ads but less than Google UI. If you can the remove internet connection for this one app.

Try with your own risk and only if you know what you are doing.

I have the same tv and I’m not very impressed with it picture-wise on YTTV. Sports don’t look sharp even in 1080.
