Yesterday I was trying to use a 128gb MicroSD on Android TV. Noticing that it only allowed me to use it as "shared internal storage", I googled and learned that I had to format as FAT32 from Windows for it to work. And it definitely worked and I was able to run ROMS without problem. I think you could use the amount of storage you mention as long as the drives have the correct power supply and file format (FAT32).
