Shield pro 2019, Netflix only plays DolbyVision sometimes

by BradMJustice

Sorry if this isn't the right sub to ask this. I googled a ton and couldn't seem to find the exact same scenario, and I'm posting in a few related subs to find answers.

I have an LG CX, shield pro 2019, all running through a Sony STR-DH790 AVR, all connected with 48 Gbps HDMI 2.1 cables. The shield is on a very strong 5 Ghhz wifi band. I was watching The Witcher season 1 earlier today on the shield Netflix app, and DolbyVision engaged appropriately. I went away for a couple of hours, came back, started to watch season 2, and I'm no longer getting DV. I do get the "VISION-ATMOS" logo on the show screen in Netflix, but it just doesn't switch on now. Even going back to season 1 doesn't engage it.

By all accounts, I assume my configuration is correct since it was working earlier. I do have DV enabled on the shield, and my current resolution says "DolbyVision and HDR ready". My DV content on plex works correctly. So I'm not sure what's going on here. Any help is appreciated!

Long time shield with an avr and LG c8 user here, I've seen this happen on occasion. I think it's a handshake issue with in the HDMI chain, since it seems that Netflix checks for Dolby vision, Atmos, and HDR compatibility each time devices are powered on or off. Easiest way I've found to fix is force close the Netflix app (double tap home and then down on Netflix to force close) then just reopen the app with everything powered on. Whole system restart also works.

Only reason I can think of is net speeds. Since you're on wifi, try ethernet... I'm not sure how you can force dolby vision to load, but I'm assuming Netflix will start with a lower quality when streaming then ramp up. Even youtube does this on a couple hundred mbit download speeds for me.

Is it just the Witcher? Is it just Netflix? Does HDR content work in Netflix and if not does it work anywhere else. If it’s just the show/app probably just force close or even delete and reinstall app. Or just unplugging the shield may hell. If one or both hdr versions aren’t working might try a factory reset but there’s a good chance the issue is being caused somewhere else in the chain. Checking the receive. Does it have enhanced hdmi mode or equivalent turned on to ensure the correct bandwidth. If it is try toggling it. Checking the TV is deep color on for that hdmi on the tv? If it is toggle it. Also worth unplugging every hdmi in the chain and plugging them back in to ensure it’s not a handshake issue. Can hardwire the shield to ensure it’s not a connection issue. Also worth checking the received signal dialogue on the receiver if it has one to double check what it’s seeing. Might try unplugging everything from power let it sit for 30 second plug back in. That’s what I would start with for fixes. I’m guessing it’s probably just an issue with Netflix though. In which case on or all of these should do the trick. Force close. Unplug the shield for 30 and plug it back in. Delete and reinstall.

Let me know if your able to get it figured out. Interesting one.
